My AA renewal is due. Now I have always had very good service from the AA over the years and when I say years well over thirty with the AA. I do not think I have ever waited more than an hour and often less for the breakdown van to arrive and they have nearly always fixed the problem, and if not towed me to someone who could.
Now I have been looking at alternatives as the renewal price with the AA is £187.00 that includes the full cover options, including help with parts and garage cover. Others companies are offering what appears to be the same service and cover for a lot less. The trouble is are the others as good, who do you use and can you recommend an alternative breakdown service. I have had a Britannia Rescue Service for around 20 years and have used it twice, both fast and without issue, and with a Defender I think I would feel I was taking a risk without it. I just renew it each year really, and haven't done a cost / service comparison, but for around £100 I get... Recovery to a Garage or Home if not fixed at the road side, Mine is not Home Start (so need to be more than 0.5 miles from Home I have coverage for two Land Rovers, my wife and I are covered in each + Personal Cover so we are covered when travelling in another vehicle + we are covered for the Defender + Caravan in Europe (remember them!) for up to 30 days a year (Get all the kit home)...can't really complain. http://roadsideassistance.co.uk/company/br...own-cover/  Click image to enlarge This was when I realised I had an Intermittent Starting Problem...1 Mile from Home... RAC. I've been with them for many years, and have got the whole family covered with full recovery, home start, onward travel.
You could say I've paid a lot of money for little use, because I have not called them much. But when I have needed them they have always gone the extra mile. Last year I was on the motorway in my 66 Series 2a, when the fan belt snapped. It was late on a Sunday and I had no spare in the vehicle. I was resigned to a recovery home, but the RAC mechanic had a root in the depths of his van, and emerged with a new Unipart fan belt for a Talbot Sunbeam! He knew it would fit. I've been with Brittania for years. If you have a vaguely public sector related job you get a good discount by joining the CSMA. Used them twice, just to rescue my wife when she had punctures. Both times they were prompt and professional. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Is that the renewal price on the notification or after you've haggled them down? The reason I ask is I've similar cover and it's just over £110  I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

I left the RAC when they left me stranded in Wales back in the early 70s.
I've been a grateful member of the AA ever since. Running vintage and modified vehicles in that period I've used them quite a lot. It's always been 'service with a smile'. |

Got my Land Rover covered by a policy associated with my Insurance.
I can't recommend as I have luckily never needed to use them. Green flag seems to get a good reviews. Been members of both the RAC and AA in the past, neither of which were particularly bad or gave cause for concern. |

Been thinking of green flag, as they are £80.00 cheaper foe the same cover, but it seems they use local garages to come out to you, what happens if their mechanics are busy? For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Same thing that happens if the AA or RAC man is busy, they get another indie garage to do it.
To be honest, I can't remember the last time I saw an AA / RAC van? One of our indie breakdown companies in Norwich used to do most of the RAC work round here. Not sure if they still do? |

Just to throw an alternative in there I use GEM Motoring assist, recovery /reclaim package and have done since 2012 , used them twice.
They use local garages and it works perfectly. Cheap too. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response |

I'm with Green Flag through the Caravan Club as they were the only company that would recover the caravan as well under the company insurance. Touch wood I haven't had to use them for approx. six years but prior to that I have always had good response except to one time when the D1 alarm system/immobiliser played up and shut the engine down while deep on the North York moors in December , a firm from near York failed to turn up after 2 hours so a firm from near Hartlepool were called and found me in 45 minutes , the drivers priority was to get S.H.M.B.O. and myself into the cab of his vehicle wrapped up in space blankets, heater on full and us with a hot drink then he winched to D1 on to the tilt and slide. I was told by a MD of a garage that was signed up to Green Flag that they had to commit to turn out a mechanic/recovery vehicle within 10 minutes of a call out no matter what. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Tell them you are cancelling and they will offer you a cheaper price. That way you can stay with the company you have had good service with. When I was with them they added unnecessary extras onto the price in the hope you would not notice. Every time I queried it they reduced the price. Got fed up in the end and moved to RAC, but they are just as bad at hiking the renewal price.
