How much play is in your steering shaft UJs?
Not a biggy, just tinkering today.

But the steering shaft assembly QMN500270 as pictured:

The UJ on the left of that image is the upper one which sits just under the brake servo (at least on my RHD), wondering please could you give your shaft a wiggle ( Rolling Eyes ) below the joint and tell me if you feel or see any knocking or movement* ?

When on rough terrain that is testing the direction I am steering I can sometimes feel 'feedback'. Just trying to nut out where it is...

Yes, I have a damper installed, I suspect it's further upstream though.

Mine has had a very small amount of movement in the upper UJ for about the last three years, and each time I expecty it to fail the MOT test becuasse of this, but it's not yet been spotted (I haven't fixed it because I think it is an interesting test of the tester - it *should* fail, but is not at all easy to detect).

I have a couple of spare shafts put aside ready for the day ot does fail.

You can also tell that the movement is there on some bumpy surfaces when there is a perceptible "knock" in the column. Fortunately the MOT tester's route with the Tapley meter for the brake test is smoot, so this doesn't happen.

Curiously although I first found the movement about three years ago, it hasn't got any worse since (and three years is about 100k miles for me) and I wonder if it has always been there from new.

Inceidentally the only difference between the upper shaft for a TDCi and a TD5 (apart from a huge difference in proce) is the heat shield round the top joint rubber member. The purpose of the shield is to protect the joint from the heat from the cat (or DPF/cat on a 2.2, I guess) and it does mean that however tempting it is due to the price difference, a TD5 column should not be fitted to a Puma.

Mine has a little play also. My indy assures me it is perfectly normal and due to the rubber in cylindrical bit just below the upper uj.

Mine is def in the UJ.

If it were a prop shaft I'd be replacing, but I see it's sold as an assembly with next to nought user 'tampering' allowed.

Might see how it goes over the next three years!

And yes I read about the heat shield Td5 no no too Thumbs Up Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

It's common rather than normal, and there should be no play anywhere in the upper column. Mine is the top UJ as well, my initial thought was that being in a warm play the assembly grease (if there is any) dries out. Since it hasn't got any worse in a very high mileage, I am now inclined to think it just wasn't very good to start with.

As long as it is minimal, doesn't affect the steering, and you keep an eye on it, I don't think you need to worry. If it fails an MOT type test, then change it.

The two spares I have were both 2nd hand ex-breaker and are fine, they were about a tenner each, vastly cheaper than the excruciating price of new genuine.

The Britpart version is classed as 'OEM' and with cast parts (like flanges) the blue box hasn't been too bad..

But then again, it is steering we're talking about Shocked Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

The annoying thing is that the TD5 part, which is exactly the same except for the crappy little heat shield, is abour £40 iirc. Big Cry

I haven't the vehicle to look at at the moment but would it be possible to use the heat shield from the old puma shaft on a new Td5 shaft?

Or have they designed it such that would be taking the failing UJ(s) along for the ride? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Unfortunately it is not removable - the shaft cannot be dismantled at all.
