I was wondering what is the best shaker can spray for a rear cross member. Mine needs a little bit of cosmetic care as my dogs have scratched it when jumping in and out (not for the first time). I usually use Hammerite satin black, and while it gives a good finish and is very similar to the original OEM black, it takes ages to dry, especially in cold weather, it says on the can up to fifteen minutes to dry but really takes a lot longer .

I find that the best quality spray comes from the UPOL cans.

I need to do the rear mud flap brackets also at the same time as the cross member as the paint coating is just peeling off the brackets. Would you paint them all at the same time with what ever your using, reason I ask is they look a different colour black ?

For a rattle can solution then Wurth stone guard as a flexible base coat, then you can overpaint with a more traditional paint to your own taste and colour.
I did this to the rear crossmember of my old 90 before I sold it and it came out really nice with a layer of Simoniz Tough black over the top. |

I used Isopon Zinc 182 primer (recommended by a blacksmith), followed by Halfords Satin Black on the visible parts of my rear crossmember and mudflap brackets. It looks pretty good but I don't know how long it will last given that I can't access the other side of the crossmember to protect it.
When I had the car professionally under guarded & waxoyled they 'resprayed' the rear crossmember as part of the job (for no extra charge). I'm glad I didn't pay for it because the rust started reappearing within weeks! I know very little about car finishes but when I was preparing the crossmember to spray it myself, I rubbed it down and then degreased /removed the dust with methylated spirits and the black finish the body shop used dissolved in the meths! There was no primer and the black paint seemed to be about as robust as marker pen ink. Perhaps the body shop was aiming for an OE factory finish on the crossmember?! |
