Any way to increase heat output from TD5 heated seats?
Hi Forum,

I have a 2006 TD5 soft top with factory fitted heated seats - during the winter I need all the heat I can get in the soft top and my heated seats doesnt seem to contribute with very much heat.. Both seats works but never get more than luke warm.

Is there any way to adjust/increase the heat output from the seats? supply more power, adjust a thermostat etc?

Christian

I don't think there is I'm afraid. Unless you install another set of heating pads on top of the standard ones? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Hi Christian. Could it be that your 2006 seat heaters are getting a little old and ineffectual? The reason I say this is that I have recently fitted a set of heated Puma seats in to my TD5 and they get at times a little uncomfortably hot...!

I am happy to check the resistance of each element if you want to compare them.

You probably need to change the heating pads. I've got a 2004 Td5 XS and mine get nice and warm. So much so that I find I have to turn them off after a while.

Thank you for the replies.

The car is in really good condition - it was put away for storage btw 2006 and 2013 and only have 40.000 miles on it now, so I was hoping that the heater pads wasn't that worn..

But it looks I will take a look at the pads anyway.

@Guy : It would be great if you could measure the resistance - (I am not an electrical engineer - where do I have to measure to compare? - across the pins on the seat plug?)

If I am to change the pads - what part are the best to use? original LR parts or aftermarket like Exmoore? My LR originals only have one setting on/off - can I reuse the wiring for the Exmoore ones that have low/medium/high setting.

Best,
Christian

I had a problem with the heated seats in my Td5. Not factory fitted though.
One of the wires broke due to the constant twisting of the wire when I changed gear. Meant that only half the base was heated.

I have to say the xs heated seats in my 2002 90 aren't amazing. They get warm and probably too warm after about an hour but then cool down again so can be pretty much on constantly - where as the ones in my parents L322 need to be turned off full power after about 5 minutes or they are uncomfortably warm.

There is definitely room for improvement. Especially in a soft top! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I have a set of XS factory "warmed" seats from 2015. I refer to them a "warmed" because they just don't get hot. From day 1 (and they only had a few hundred miles on them when I installed them) they have never measured up to my expectations as seat heaters. It's better than nothing, but there a TON of room for improvement. it's a Landrover thing...

I completely agree! They take the chill off on a morning but other than that they're pretty useless!

Nakatanenga, today has announced new heater pads today. Unlike conventional heater pads these are carbon fibre ones, can be cut to size. If a single element fails it will continue to work unlike the more conventional ones.

I have not tried them or seen them yet.

Nicking an English translation

Quote:

Product Information
The high-quality carbon seat heating system for enhancement of individual seats designed.

You can heat the carbon surface heating elements on a round switch off (0% power) or set in one of 2 different heating modes:
High: 100% performance = full power for fast warm-up
Low 25% power = warmth in continuous operation

Differences of carbon surface heating elements for heating the wire technology:
The carbon surface heating elements have compared to the previously widespread heating elements in pigtail considerable advantages. Thus, only carbon heating elements can be adapted and cut during installation. In the conventional strand technology, a heating wire runs in a wavy manner within the heating element. If this is damaged in one place, eg by mechanical stress or overheating, the entire heating element falls out. Parallel technology is used in the novel carbon surface heating elements. There are many independent carbon fibers within the heating element ensuring their reliability. The heat distribution in the carbon surface heating elements is much more homogeneous and therefore more pleasant.

This is the only solution in the winter. And yes it is an insulated one.
