I run a 4rt Montesa....which is what I wanted, but as I began learning on it, a lot of people said I'd be better off selling it as it's always trying to kill me. I saw that as a challenge. They are a handful!
However, a 125 will be more than enough for doing trials. GasGas are the most popular bikes and you can pick them up for around £800 upwards. There's a lot of 'dead easy' trials that you can do and are great for beginners and kids. What budget you thinking? |

Off topic but... Why did they stop putting kick start on the telly? I loved watching it as a kid and was always envious of my two older brother who had there own trials bikes. Ray

Greeni - thanks for that info. I don't want to spend a fortune on it, just get something that isn't going to clap out every 5 minutes. Gas Gas 125 looks like a good shout - daft question but will a 125 be ok shifting 14(ish) stone?

It will be fine, a mates dad is very succesful on a 125 and he's at least 14st. If you do want to start trialling as a sport, a 125 will be more than enough.
If you want to spend around £1200 a Montesa 315 would be my recommnedation, 2-stroke 250 which is very nice and easy to ride. @Ray, I used to watch that as a kid too! The skill level has improved quite a bit, check 'Toni Bou' on youtube ![]() |

I had an '08 Beta Rev3 270, great bike but the problem for me was the kickstart on the left. Not too bad on level ground but a bit of a struggle when half-way up a rocky section or in a stream, especially when the tank has just clobbered you in the tripes.

I've watched the indoor trials world championship for the last few years on Eurosport but they don't seem to put it on any more, ![]() My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

If you don't mind trying a couple of ideas before you head off to the dealers I might save you a few quid.
I have been around trials bikes all my life, and still involved today. I work at a very well known road & off road bike dealership. Beta clutches are known for sticking, its common throughout the model range, several other makes also suffer from this. the quick fix, providing the correct oil as been used in the engine is to place the front wheel against a wall, start the bike and pop it in gear, keep the clutch lever held in, and hold onto the brakes until the clutch clears. if you don't fancy that start it up, pop it in second gear and ride it around with the clutch lever pulled in until it clears.... usually one of these ways cures the problem. if it doesn't then your looking at spending money.... regards |

My Sherco 290 does the same with the clutch sticking when cold and the oil is a little old |

We have been gong to the indoor trials for the last few years- father & mother-in-law love it so has been their Yule gift.
The ability of the riders is awesome, its absolutely fantastic to watch! I can't help but find the trials pushbike rides possibly even more impressive though- if you have not seen it already have a google for 'Danny Macaskill's wee day out'! Chris |
