Where the loom passes through the floor there are some plugs/gromets that seal the wire entry.

Although the guard in the wheel arch should stop water being thrown up...its worth just checking.

Also check the seal to the door...the top part of my door had to be adjusted when new as there was a gap you could pass things through!! but it could be less obvious Mike

just in case its the same?
mine is in at the moment as the floor panel to the boot doesnt have any sealant where its riveted with dome heads - might be worth a look. Water makes its way in while driving in wet conditions - not a problem while stationary but unless you've bought a model to look at and not drive might be an issue.

Bruce

I found that although the seal was in place the bolts pulling the "canopy" down were not tight enough and you could move the seal around between the two.
I tightened the bolts after removing all the rear panels and fitted silicone from inside which incidentally squeezed all the way to the outside demonstrating the size of the air gap.

The panels all pull off easily but I also made a tool to get neatly ender the panel pins for the side panels. You just have to buy a few new pins if they break

Thank you Capelandy.

I have a feeling this is the problem as after a few days of driving it around, i found two bolts (10mm I think) that I dont have a clue where they come from, in the back of the Defender and the rattles had stopped.
I will pull the panels to check.

Could you show me a picture of the tool. (even if you mail it to me at bjturner5@gmail.com)

Thankyou

Will do. Thanks again MSE.

BTW I was looking at it again this morning with a torch. I noticed from the outside a small join in the rubber about 400mm from the rear. This join is not very good. When I opened up the join, I found that it has not been joined evenly all the way through. I also noticed that the gap in the front of the panel is slightly more than towards the back. (could mean the back is not tight - this could be where the nuts that I found come from)

Got to love the Land Rover QC department!

I will strip it this weekend and see.

Thanks again for all the help.

I cant go and check to see if its still the same but...the rear window seals and the alpine seals are types that once the glass is in them (and the seal) and both are in the pannel a filler strip is inserted in the middle of the seal to locate it. There is a small gap in that sometimes...it might not be what your on above, infact the puma may have changed it - ive only changed the glass on a 300Tdi defender Mike

Hi All....just a report back.......I found the leak .... I THINK! Very Happy

After taking all the advice here I removed all the panels in the rear. Was actually easier than I expected.

I then found in about the center of the side windows there is a bracket holding the center of tha canopy down. These did not have nuts on both sides (left and right). So I fitted the ones I had found. I then tightened the canopy down a bit more on the 4 corner bolts/nuts..... it still leaked. Sealed everything with sealant and it still leaked......

Then I did what Mse suggested Thumbs Up and had someone stand outside and spray the vehicle with a hose........I found that the water is comming through the pop rivets just under the window (these can be seen from outside).....Now I just need to find something to seal them.

Another good thing about this exercise is that I have also sealed up all the joints that allowed dust to come in.

Thank you for your help.

Hi guys,

It's going to be trickier for me Sad i have no rear windows as mine is a 110 Utility. So basically the rear bay is all closed apart from the door window. Still i get the leak... i will try removing the panels but as i have no side windows there, i have no other idea where the water should be coming from.

Any ideas?
