The newer ones have holes in the ends for the rubber end caps. That's the only difference as far as I'm aware. But if you're buying a replacement consider an aftermarket HD bumper which are made of much stronger stuff than standard and therefore may actually protect the front of the bodywork in an impact. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

You can fit an older style bumper (often they are much cheaper) as the rubber end caps will still fit, however you will have to drill four holes to each end cap to fit the fir tree fastners. It is easy to do just fit the end caps on to the old style bumper and then just drill out the holes using the rubber end cap holes as a guide. You could look here. Some examples are not cheap though.

spot on, not that expensive really compared to the rear bumper options for these. I might just bite the bullet and buy one of these, If I am going to get something new, it might as well decent and solid.
My dad said that the rubber capped ones are weaker? I cannot see how like Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

^^ I have seen people mention that newer bumpers are thinner and weaker than older older ones.
I have also seen people say that a thicker front bumper is more likely to result in a bent chassis, in the event of a front collision. ( I am currently thinking of upgrading to a HD front bumper, with built in front recovery points) |

I think I am right in saying that the rubber end caps are only fitted on passenger carrying models (station wagons), and not commercials - for some reason? Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

That may be true, certainly my old 110DC didn't have them from new. Although I have seen many with them fitted that may have been by the owners.

It may have changed at a certain age? A quick browse through the approved used list seems to show all hard tops with the end caps. Some have had new grills etc so may have been owner upgraded. But this example is a 2012 and probably the "plainest" example and it has them fitted

I think at one point (during the Td5 era) higher spec models had the end caps i.e. County and XS, but base spec didn't. At some point it changed so that they all had end caps. My Dad has a 2012 base spec 90 pick up which has them, so perhaps it changed with the 2.2 engine. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

My 2.4 Puma Hi-cap has rubber end caps. Don't know why but in the back of my mind something says it was to meet a regulation concerning pedestrian safety. Can't think of any other reason for adding them.

My poverty spec pick up had them.
Being the standard bumper is made of cheese I replaced it with a D44 one instead |

I cannot recommend Ian dixons products enough, he does a large selection
of H/D (6mm) standard style bumpers to winch bumpers to rock sliders. Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172442351972 This is similar to the one I bought from him only mine has a military style towing point built in too |

I have just replaced my front bumper with a Firstfour bumper https://www.firstfour.co.uk/defender-heavy-duty-bumper-2.html , I could pick the original one up with one hand the Firstfour one I needed help lifting.
The only problem I had was that the tolerances of the Firstfour bumper are tight and it needed a bit of persuasion from a rubber mallet to get it over the chassis. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |
