2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Java Black

Oil smells of diesel. What to check?

Hi folks!

Oh the glory of DIY oil changes! 30 minutes spent draining the oil. 3 hours spent cleaning the workshop.

As it turns out, the oil does not trickle, but rather jets out of the engine

But here’s my question: the old oil smells faintly of diesel.

I have a little time on my hands over the next few days, so what should I check? The copper gaskets have been replaced already. The coolant is uncontaminated.

I thought that is how the oil service light came on on a puma. When the oil had a certain amount of diesel in it it needs changing. I think I read it somewhere and didn't dream it

Thanks! No oil service light yet - albeit I am not sure I have such an indicator, it's a 07 2.4 TDCi -

That's indeed so for the 2.2 TDCi, but not for the 2.4.
The 2.2 gets diesel contamination due to the DPF recycling, the 2.4 does not have that.... feature.

To be honest if it is a faint smell I wouldn't worry about it, but I would keep a close eye on the oil level. If it goes up, then investigation is called for.

I find it quite funny that such an oil service light exists

But it fits with the rest of the Defender. Injector seals might be it. Aren't they the same as the copper gaskets sealing the injector towards the fuel lines?

I am having injector trouble anyway (cyl. 1+3 are knocking and are slightly out of tolerance), so everything will have to come out for four new injectors on Jan. 5th anyway...

I think not. My service light simply corresponds with time and mileage. I click the service light away and leave oil as is. Light won't come up again before time or mileage are 'service-critical' once more.
Hence quality is not the issue (in my case at least)
