I have a 2007 TDCi
I've just driven about 200 miles up the motorway at around 85mph most of the way. I noticed that I was achieving this speed without trying. Usually I find that when I'm in 6th gear, as soon as I come to any gradient, the motor struggles and when the revs drop to 2000, I change down to 5th. But today, I've been able to stay in 6th even through temporary 50mph restricted sections irrespective of any gradients, it just keeps pulling! Now, for the last hour of the journey, the engine warning lamp has been on, but no apparent change in performance. Any ideas anyone? |

Not until I get home next week. I've got about 500 miles to do before then.
Is the EGR valve a big deal or can it just be blanked off like on a TD5? |

It cannot simply be blanked, it must be disabled in the ECU. Pete Bell at BAS, and the other tuners, all offer sensible remaps which disable the EGR and improve performance with being OTT.
Simply blanking the EGR on a Puma will cause the MIL to illuminate. Since the remap route leaves the EGR in situ but inoperative, MOT tests should not be a problem. |

As Blackwolf says it's not as simple as earlier models to blank the EGR, however changing the valve is a PITA and does come at a significant cost if you're not able to do it yourself. The far better solution is to have it electrically isolated from the system, I went the BAS route eventually and regret not doing so earlier with the added bonus of having a far more pleasurable vehicle to drive. Keeping in mind though it may not be the EGR at all I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

Well:
The engine light turned out to be due to a p1103 (MAF fault), which I'll deal with later. The power increase turned out to be because I'd reconnected the tachometer that I'd disconnected about 18 months ago! I unplugged the tachometer soon after I bought the motor. I thought that the only detrimental effect was that the speedo and odometer stopped working. It always bothered me that it was gutless in 6th gear but just accepted it as I haven't driven another to compare it with. As I was doing a long journey with varying speed restrictions I thought it'd be useful to have a working speedo. But the power increase was a welcome side effect! Why would the tachometer wiring affect the power? |

Why would you unplug, other than to conceal mileage? |

It was irritating me as it kept bleeping because it has no card in it, also it occupies the space where the passenger grab handle should be.

Ah, you mean tachograph, not tachometer! Makes more sense now.

Interesting...
Why does it's installation (or lack of connection) affect engine performance? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

I thought they were the same thing! I had thought that when I took it out I could just remake the cabling where it had been cut into the speedo feed, but it's more complicated than that so the job just got left. I hadn't imagined that it would upset anything else. I would have thought that the LR garage who serviced it recently would have noticed that it wasn't running right. |

The instrument pack converts the speed sensor pulses into data which it then sends to the engine management system via the CAN bus. Without speed data the EMS thinks the vehicle is stationary and limits the power/revs available. |

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that.
Should this have been obvious to my indi LR garage when they serviced it, or can they be forgiven for missing it? |

Not unless they took the vehicle for a test drive as this would not generate any fault codes.
