Extrons android double din anyone use one?
In the New Year I will hopefully have a go at the double din install now I have the surround...

Arrgghh Cutting the dash and extending leads etc...

Anyway I've been looking at Head Units and I do like my Android phone (after being an Apple person for years, I don't miss it)

So I like the fact these head units can be customized and apps added, It can use google maps as the Sat Nav and basically any app in the play store will work. Priced around £200 to £280 they are similar to the entry Sony / Pioneers.

So does anyone use one? I've seen a few You Tube clips and they look good but rather here from people who use one.

Not one of those, but I do have an xtrons double din in my 300. It has xtrons own OS and is ok, simple and easy to use. Had it for about 12 months now and has been faultless. Xtrons has good customer service too, with a forum that the manufacturers actually reply to and help if there are and queries.
As you say, you get on with the android os then it should be fine, similar to your phone if not the same. At that price I would go for it and you would probably have to fork out a bit more for a second hand unit from a brand like Sony, kenwood etc..

Have a look at autopumkin - the only thing you need to watch are different sizes of double din - yes, i thought hey were standard too!

Andriod car os isnt as good as phone os, but its better than a normal interface and has some features you cant get on others. Mike

I've got a single din Xtrons unit (flip up screen), and for the price, it's a great bit of kit.

Don't be expecting a perfect, trouble free unit though, it's quite buggy and unlikely that those bugs will be resolved (it appears that xtrons prefer bringing out newer units as opposed to fixing the old ones).

An example of one such bug is the radio app (FM) - it will occasionally lose the frequency number on the screen. The radio station is still "there", but it'll display 87.5 instead of the correct station frequency.

But as I say, for the money they sound good and have a great deal of functionality (GPS, reversing cam, ability to install some apps from google play store). It also has the ability to install a Bluetooth ODB scanner for real time data and scan fault codes which is kinda cool.

^ Good comments

Given the price of the facia, I could do the double din swap fro around £300 (assuming I can do it myself) which I would be much happier with.

All I really want is, Ability to play from USB or card and Bluetooth. If I can install my Camera to this Unit even better and most seem to have GPS so route planning via Google maps or similar is a bonus.

Next year I may take a punt (I've a Birthday in January so I can ask for pennies)

Thanks

The main criticism of these units (and many of the Chinese Android units) is that they are quite slow, have a lot of unneeded stuff taking up space and access to memory is a bit limited.

There are a number of alternative ROMs available though which fix most of the problems so if you get one it'd be worth CAREFULLY taking a look at them.

The Malaysk ROM is very popular and is compatible with most variations of the unit you've linked to. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

^ Thanks

I've looked at a few you tube videos of the std OS and they appear to work pretty well.

I Have a Android One plus phone and that can be modified but I've had it now over 2 years (my longest ever phone) and never felt the need to do anything to it. It does all I want and speed seems good,

I know what you mean like the early tablets the screens were very slow to move and annoys you, then the graphics are a bit low rent. It seems they have all come on a long way quickly now.

Hi,

Went down the Chinese android unit route myself but with a Pumpkin Single Din Flip up Screen jobby.....

As davew says they are not without faults.
Don't expect the screen to be as cool as your smart phone's, the resolution is a lot lower and I do find if the sun shines at the wrong angle it can be difficult to see the screen.

The custom ROM approach does allow me to install and run the TOMTOM app quite nicely though. Defender Puma 110XS SW

Most importantly check the dimensions of any unit you are buying. I have installed a CA Fi unit in my 110. It was too long (I am talking about the depth) to fit in and pushes the fascia out buy atleast 1.5 cm. Make sure that you buy the fascia first and take it along with you when shopping for the head unit. I would not recommend online shopping for both at the same time. Always buy the unit afterwards. After a year with the CA Fi unit I am actually considering a xtron unit.

^ Quite confusing as seem yours 'Should' have fitted but different by 2mm

Is there an actual size any where that will fit? for sure?

I really don;y like the idea of having to shave some off the surround.

As I said before, best way to make sure it fits perfectly is to buy the facia and then shop for the head unit. No one could give you the exact measurements. As you can see from my experience. The depth of the head unit also should be considered very carefully.
