Is there a common failure on the wiring harness & any premptive steps that can be taken?

Just check the loom from actuator and follow it around the engine.
Unclip the loom, so you can check the underside for rubbing.

The loom on these engines are installed incredibly tight in places.
If you slacken them off, you can wrap some rubber tape or similar to prevent it rubbing.

The worse point is the fat part of the loom that runs across the front at the top of the engine. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

this was the issue with mine - once all the masking tape had been unwound...

always get the garage to have a look. lesson learned! Defender 90 Puma 2.4
