Hi guys,
One for the rivet counters today When I went on the factory tour, I was told that the paint shop was built by BMW in 1996 with its dipping processes for cleaning, priming and then sort of undercoating the body shells as they rolled through on skids. Prior to that they were just hand sprayed with primer and paint. I believed this to be true, however it does not explain what I found when I took my 1991 cappings off the tub. Click image to enlarge As you can see, the body has had a spraying of top coat (Arles Blue) but underneath the capping there was a layer of primer/undercoat. What's more, under the foam seal between the capping and the tub was paint, so the paint must have been applied before the body went into the paintshop. This would indicate that the raw materials had been stamped out, spot welded together, painted, then the cappings added, then put on the skid and sprayed. So, whats happened then? Indeed at the factory I could see the bare body panels being spot welded together, then the foam seal being stuck on, then the cappings added then it going off to paint which would logically dictate that if you were to remove the cappings on a post 96 defender and peal back the foam strip(if present?) you would see bare aluminium. As I say, anoraks on and rivet counters gather! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

That is also my belief too again via hearsay.
So does this confirm my theory that the tubs were primed before the cappings were put on? Can anyone confirm for certain? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

To be honest, I think that picture is all the confirmation you need. It couldn't happen any other way. Darren
