Having a nightmare insuring 110XS USW!!! I've read plenty of threads on insurance on here and have followed majority advice and called Adrian Flux, Land Rover Insurance and NFU....ALL of them are completely confused as to what a Defender 110XS Utility Station Wagon is!!! Land Rover initially wouldn't quote it as they think it's 'commercial' - have now got them to do a quote after my dealer called them. Their quote is based on it being a pick-up, but at least they have quoted... NFU don't know what the car is - it's the whole issue about it being a "utility" with no rear windows that is bothering them. They have now referred it to their underwriters to see if they will cover it, but it's not sounding hopeful at the moment. At this rate I may as well cancel the order and get a standard 110XS SW because they treat that as a 'car' and will cover it fine. BUT I want the "utility" for added security - which is surely better for them as the insurer as well This poses the question though - if you have a 110 USW and it's insured with NFU, what do they describe it as on your policy? Years back I worked for Churchill Insurance (for 9 yrs, so I still have a good understanding of car insurance) and if they have it down as a 110XS Station Wagon, and it's actually a Utility then you may find your cover isn't valid... At the moment I'm left very frustrated and unable to insure my new toy - unless I take Land Rover Insurance who will cover it (and charge!) for a pick-up Defender?!? Simon '11 Defender 110XS Utility SW '07 Discovery 3 HSE '58 Porsche 356A (not good off road) '59 Lambretta (not good on or off road!)

NFU - on my document 2008. landrover defender 110 XS TDI, 2402cc, diesel, manual. i then spoke to then and confirmed by asking them to read back what notes they had on it and they specified Utility Station Wagon. my 2.8TGV auto is described as a 2.5Tdi manual as they dont have the 2.8tgv as a drop down option they just added notes to the file to specify what it is and i requested an email copy of these for my peace of mind. £456 for this years premium. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop

The letter is reference 'Light Goods Vehicle Insurance' and the statement details 'Land Rover Defender 110 Utility Wagon'. When I initially called them they couldn't find it on their system, then I suggested they look on their light goods listings and hey presto. D300 HSE 110

I had exactly the same experience with my Double Cab - the 110USW is bound to be in the LGV category

Just had a call back from NFU - they won't insure it at all as our post-code is not an area they cover?!? I'm even more confused than ever!!! We live in a low-crime area in North Kent!!! This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever!! In 20 years of insuring cars I have NEVER had an issue with post-code. To be honest, I think they don't know what it is and are using that as an excuse to duck out of it. Over the years I've had Porsches, TVRs, Maseratis and Range Rovers - I only mention this to show that I've had no problem insuring higher value/ higher performance cars. It also shows what having 3 kids does for your ability to spend money on fast cars too I am just totally baffled on this one and it's all rapidly taking the shine and fun out of getting this new Defender  Simon '11 Defender 110XS Utility SW '07 Discovery 3 HSE '58 Porsche 356A (not good off road) '59 Lambretta (not good on or off road!)

Good point TC - I've just called them. The lady explained that NFU don't offer cover within M25 unless it is garaged, but she reckoned she could get it agreed (we are about 4 miles within). She continued the quote and it came up at £805!!! She explained that their premiums for 4x4's have gone up quite a lot lately, so I guess I've just been unlucky. I've called Land Rover Insurance back and got a quote for a standard 110XS SW, and it was £26 MORE than the quote they gave me yesterday based on a 110 Pick-up... So I'm going to stick with LR Insurance. The cover is very good, it's all LR-only for any repairs etc and covers all off-roading, so fine for me. Went throught the same motions as you, you could not dream it up. All those adverts in the LR Mags and only 1 insurer was prepared to insure me, i questioned why they were advertising in a specific 4x4 off road magazines, saying they cover specialist 4x4, off roading, modifications etc etc, and when it came down to it they were only interested in no modified D3's and the like I am sure you read my posts from last year, I ended up with Adrian Flux. I am surprise after a year the Utility is still not coming up with insurers, then nearly convinced me a Utility did not even exist and LR had run away with my money Good luck it will be worth the pain in the end
