Engine warm up and Temperature gauge position
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this for me?

My new to me 2015 90 HT takes twice as long (20 minutes) to warm up in the mornings on way way to work than my 2.4 SVX did even with driving them both the same in the same manner on the same road Once the temperature gauge gets to half way (Normal) and I turn the heater on full heat the temperature gauges drops down to a quarter but the heat from the heater blows remains constant. If I accelerate or drive uphill so the engine is working harder the gauge goes back to half way (normal) but as soon as the engine isn't having to work so hard i.e on the flat or down hill the gauge drops down to a quarter again. The gauge doesnt go above the half way mark. Even if I dont touch the heater controls this still happens as described

The engine has had an "Alive" remap and the EGR valve electronically closed and I spoke to Phil at "Alive" today and they were really helpful in every way but hasn't been able to shed any light on why this might happen, he hasnt come across this before. The Defender drives really really nicely and the remap is superb (had my previous 3 land rover defender 90s 1 x TD5 & 2 x 2.4S all remapped by different companies and the temperature gauges have always been half way when warm and this would take up to 10 minutes)

I have checked the coolant level and that is all present and correct so I am confused (it doesn't take much) but if anyone can suggest what maybe causing this I would be grateful. Thanks 2015 HT XS 90

I would think that it is A) actually doing that so maybe the thermostat is sticking slightly open and hence the extended warm up and then cool off OR B) the gauge isn't right and indicating wrongly possible electrical fault?

Even on the few cold days we had after the gauge would climb to the centre in about 10 miles and stay there regardless to up or down hill driving, the heater will gradual increase heat in line with the gauge. IMHO after the 10 miles and ~ 10 mins I have to turn it down or i'll roast.

Similar setup to you with the 2.2 with an alive tune with the EGR off.

With the last few days of frosty mornings, mine has been taking about 15 mins of typical town driving to warm up. Even then it has been reluctant go the very last bit on the needle (ie to bang on mid may) and the air is not quite the usual scolding. It hasn't really gone the last bit till getting onto a dual carriageway.

I had been wondering whether that is normal or not. Seems a bit too long?

Thanks for the info Devon Rover think I will change the thermostat and see what difference that makes, I don't think it's an electrical fault on the temperature gauge as it's too consistent in the way it behaves with regard to where it climbs too and then drops back too and the time taken each time this happens.

My 2105 takes a good 5 miles worth of driving on a 50mph road to get the needle to Half way, my needle also drops if I'm sat still for a while, I put this down to the fan constantly running.

Just had the same issue with mine. Dealer diagnosed it as a faulty thermostat, swapped and now back to the usual furnace like setting Thumbs Up 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW

Seems approx the same as for my def 2.2 from 2012 except that this is comming after 4 years and 117000km.
Changing the thermostat did change nothing.

I would like to say that it seems to be ok know
Phil current : defender 110 sw 2.2 puma 2012 and 230.000km today and
again my Range Rover VM2.5 engine from 1992 and 528.000km today.

Same with mine.... Even after 30 mins of driving mine will sometimes only just get one quarter of the way, and if we hit standstill traffic it plunges back into the blue with no hot air at all.

It is in now for some failing paint work and they are looking at it. Only 18months old... My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.

Mines now booked in for the thermostat on Tuesday next week, if it has failed its warranty claim if not it it about £250.00!! Fingers crossed it's failed Very Happy seems to be quite a regular problem reading the replies on here so far to my original posting....oh the joys of owning a Defender Laughing 2015 HT XS 90
