I had a similar problem. It was a small tear in a turbo hose that only opned up under load and only noticable in 6th when cruising at lower revs using torque.

Thank you bm52 for the help. When I ordered the turbo unit I asked the supplier in the UK to supply all hoses needed for the connection, but the supplier failed to do so. The supplier also mentioned possible tiny tears in these hoses.
I will try and find the part numbers for all the turbo hoses and order them. I'll let you know what happens. |

bm52 I will checked intercooler hoses and they are fine.
Please let me know what other things to look at. Does anybody else have any ideas? |

Ziggy, have you actually taken the hoses off to look at them? bm52 is right, they open up under pressure and difficult to see anything when they're fitted.

What about the pressure relief valve on the end of the fuel rail Chris

Thanks for the contribution Dieselhead.
I will send the vehicle to workshop tomorrow. I will take pictures of hoses for this group to show evidence of the state of the hoses. Dieselhead, I will also let the workshop mechanic trouble shoot the pressure relief valve at the end of fuel rail as you have suggested. Look forward to getting some results this week. I will let you have the feedback guys. Thanks again for all the ideas. |

I got the car back today with no change. All the hoses were removed, checked and replaced and then re-tested with engine revved.
I am a bit frustrated. I also have a "hard clutch" problem as well which makes in traffic driving not enjoyable. Can anyone recommend a workshop in South Africa which specialises in and has extensive expertise with Defender repairs as well as overland accessorisation. I'll think of shipping the car there for repairs and an extended holiday. I' appreciate any advice and recommendations. |

Wow. You have spent a whole lot of money looking for this fault and no joy. The good thing is you have ruled out a lot of the obvious. It would seem extremely strange to me that you are only experiencing this in 6th gear. If the truck has had dirty fuel previous to you owning it then you would have no idea how much power the truck should have if being run on purely good fuel. I would suggest that in general you are not getting the full power or torque in any gear, its just that 6th would show it more due you the higher powers and torque needed to drive this ratio. First - fuel pressure! Dirty fuel will catastrophically ruin the high pressure pump so you need to get this measured at full load. This means in 5th gear 2000rpm foot to the floor and same in 6th if you can get it there. Post the pressures. Second. Fuel rail pressure sensor. These can get blocked and damaged by dirty fuel and give the wrong readings to ECU (ie if your sensor is reading 500bar when engine is off then possibility is that ECU is getting 500bar more reading causing ECU to demand a lower (wrong) pressure from the pump) Third. Get it on a dyno. This will show you what it is outputting to the wheels and will confirm your concerns. Fourth (and to eliminate the last obvious) check accelerator movement is not fouled by carpet etc and moves full span to mechanical stop) All of your posts would suggest fuel is the problem so I would highly recommend you have some investigative works done here. Common rail engines need very clean fuel and any dirt can quickly damage the HP pump, flow control valves, sensors and injectors. Let us know how you get on. My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender. |

Hi,
i have a similar problem, i just replaced the VCV valve, cleaned the tank, fuel filter change, MAP sensor replaced, but still the same. i even took out the snorkel and checked the air filter. i think itīs not just in 6th gear, but it becomes more perceptive under pull in 6th. best regards |

Ziggy,
it seems pretty clear that your Puma just isnīt producing the 120 or so hp that it should. You have covered many of the issues that will strangle it and cause a loss of power. Induction, injection, turbo. Does it use or lose oil? In view of the dirty fuel (fuel tank, pump, injectors) you mentioned, could it be suffering from a semi-blocked cat or DPF?
