Rob, if I was in Germany like yourself, there would be only one answer in a choice between those 2, the BFG.
They are winter rated tyres with the snowflake symbol. No need to have a second set of winter only tyres, and having to swap and store them every year. In the UK a different answer. I have Conti's on the 110, don't see any need to change them, and probably won't until they need changing. |

I am thinking maybe I should go for the Cooper S/T Maxx. May fit my needs better. Thoughts?

I've had both and am currently running on BFG AT2 for the last year and wouldn't change them. Russell

I guess I bring the exception to the mainstream opinion here. I think that no A/T or M/T type tire is good for winter on-road biased driving (the OP said 95% on-road driving). In my experience (and we do a fair amount of winter driving here) all A/T & M/T tires are slippery as hell for winter on-road driving. They do work in deep snow, were the thread has traction, but on tarmac, were the main issue is ice, the big chunk-like M/T thread won’t do any good. On ice only a dedicated winter tire will offer any traction. That’s my opinion anyways. Nokia's Hakkapeliita's are very good winter tires in my opinion.

Been running Cooper AT3 for the last 4k miles. Very impressed with ride, low noise, off road on grass and muddy tracks. Waiting to see how they cope with winter.
Think the OP might need formally rated winter tyres and I don't think the Coopers have the snowflake. |

For me it's the GT Grabber AT2. 100.000 km and still going strong.
I (personally) found them a little bit quieter than the BFG AT tyre, and since they have the snowflake on the side you are covered in germany and austria. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

Hi
for the same use (95% of driving is on hard roads, highways.) I choose for my "mid loaded" 90 Hard top * - summer ; OEM Michelin Latitude Cross ( hard to find now) - winter : Cooper Discoverer M+ S not so good as the Pirelli 'Ice" I owned on my past Disco I but fair good on rainy roesq and black iced junctions. I've driven both ST Maxx and BFG in winter/spring/summer etc here in the Alps. So my penny's worth. 1. I prefer the look of the ST Maxx 2. The ST Maxx offers (IMO) much better dry-tarmac feel/feedback than the BFG. More planted. Not that we're driving Caterhams 3. I found the BFG to be marginally more slippy in damp, not wet, conditions with oils on tarmac etc. Marginally. 4. The ST Maxx is NOT a snowflake tyre, just M&S. Did a good enough job for me through two winters, but they were both mild with low levels of snow. The BFG is a snowflake tyre and feels much better in snow and on properly cold roads. 5. I still prefer the look of the ST Maxx 6. ST Maxx are much harder to come by if you are looking for an odd sized wheel. Almost impossible for me to source for my 18" Bowlers. 7. BFG is quieter on rolling tarmac, especially with the window open. ST Maxx has a noticeable hum, but actually I like it. 8. Generally BFGs seem to be cheaper, and as a snowflake you only need one set, if that matters/is preferred 9. Both seem to offer huge mileage and low wear/tear. 10. Can't tell you anything about the 4x4 Contis except that they apparently make the best winter road-biased compound bar none, at least for normal saloon cars. Literally this afternoon I will be fitting the latest Conti Winter Contact TS860 to my wife's TT, which have come top in the German tests for the last few years. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Looking at the St maxx and ko2 very closely at the moment.
In both 235/85 and 265/75, the cooper's seem to be around £20 a corner cheaper. Bfg have snowflake rating, cooper have m&s rating. Makes both of them legal options as "winter tires" for Europe as far as I know. Both have a lot of fans. I have AT Kos currently, I was going to replace with ko2, but an currently leaning towards the St maxx, mostly because of the price. I have found the bfgs to be dependable on road and in the limited amount of off road I've done on them! |

Doesn't Continental own BFG? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender
