It's common to hear groaning noises from the steering, but this is mostly on Discovery models. If the power steering pump is on it's last legs, it'll make the car sound more like a JCB or tractor when steering. It's not common to have a power steering pump fail, but obviously it can happen.

Cheers.
Is it worth doing a fluid change? |

If the PAS fluid (Cold climate) looks clean, chances are that changing it won't make any noticable difference, unless it is contaminated?

After the original steering box on my 2002 D2 started leaking, I made the mistake of getting LR to replace it. I then went through a succession of genuine parts "new" steering boxes (which are actually not new but reconditioned) most of which lasted only weeks or at most months. Eventually I got fed up with that game, and bought a box off eBay. This turned out to be from a 'normal' mileage 2001 vehicle and, never having been "reconditioned" by LR, doesn't leak.
The very original box was silent in operation. The genuine parts boxes were also silent (the only sound was the fluid dripping or squirting out of them). The eBay box doesn't leak, works a treat, but makes the most amazing graunches and creaky noises (it reminds me of a London Underground train accelerating!) at low speeds. It worried me to start with, but has now done 50k miles and is still going strong. So the bottom line is, yes, the Adwest box can make some strange and pretty wierd noises, but it probably isn't anything to worry about. I woudl also recommend that unless it is a warranty job, get the replacement box from Adwest at Reading, not LR. At least then it will have been reconditioned by someone competent who knows how to do it! |

Cheers for the views chaps.
Will watch it and see. I may do a PAS fluid change just for peace of mind. |

on some td5 defenders i believe there was recall wrt to rerouting the PAS pipes or adding extra clips/retaining tags to stop the resonating under the conditions you try. Cheers

I've noticed that mine makes some very strange noises as well, but it's only been doing it on the very cold mornings we have had over the past few months and just for a short time after start up - mainly turning on the driveway, after that it's fine. I'm not unduly bothered about it! I'll put it down to character (added to the list ).
