Not a Bowler but I have a BAS170AB remap so +50hp and A-Plan were happy to insure for an additional £30 I think it was, but they said most of this was the policy revision mid-term and probably shouldn't add much to the renewal. I'll have to wait and see on the latter. James

If it was just an ECU swap I wouldn't have an issue.
I'm currently considering two vehicle options....a Bowler Fast Road or a Bowler Challenge (insurance for road use only). |

Ooh what a nice decision to have to make. Good luck!
I'll leave those with Bowlers to reply James MY2012 110 2.2TDCi XS SW Orkney Grey - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43410.html MY1990 110 200TDi SW beautifully faded Portofino Red - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post743641.html#743641 MY1984 90 V8 Slate Grey - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post744557.html#744557 Instagram @suffolk_rovers |

Thanks for the reply anyway. I could just send Admiral the spec of a vehicle but I'm assuming they'd blow a gasket on something so individual. The only reason I'm considering them is that it would be less hassle and maybe cost to just change from another vehicle to the Bowler mid-term.

I fear none of them will know what a "Bowler Defender" is when they can barely get their head around my factory Landmark edition! (admiral think mine is a van not a CSW)
Your best bet might be declaring all the modifications and getting an agreed value on it, Admiral might do this or you may have to try someone more specialist. Just make sure if you do go down this route that you have evidence of it all either in writing or recorded phone calls just incase they try and get wriggly in the event of a claim. -2015 Defender 90 XS Landmark- |

Having good just completed the insurance merry-go-round this year I became increasingly frustrated with the lack of technical knowledge of the underwriters. Surely to successfully calculate the risks you need to know a least a little about the technical side of things . NFU for instance couldn't get their heads around the term " remapped ECU". What's the ECU? I was asked, after a somewhat tedious conversation we came up with "the computer control thing ", after this was understood, "what do you mean by remapped"? I was then advised to insure the Defender with the NFU while they worked all this out and then cancel it if they couldn't underwrite it. I had no reply to my question " what is the position if I need to make a claim in the interim".
Anyway went online with L.V. whose Web site understands all these terms.......... I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

In my opinion I think it is getting harder to insure a Defender no matter what model, for two reasons which are, it has gone out of production and the high incidence of Defender thefts.
I have just gone through re insuring my Fully restored 200Tdi with an agreed value, and I have had great difficulty Adrian Flux, Pete Best, NFU, Aviva Classic were all really difficult to deal with and wanted a premium that you had to be sat down to listen to. one insurance company asked for £2000.00 Then as soon as you mentioned modifications it was a no no. These were some of the refusals the companies used, can’t insure as the vehicle is not garaged, the interior is too new, non-standard engine (it has a genuine 200Tdi), Led lighting is not OEM, new galvanised chassis is not insurable, I have over modified it by fitting new panels even if they all OEM, and what I thought was the most ridiculous it has a sun roof fitted, the list goes on. In the end AA came back with a reasonable quote but its exclusions made my eyes water. As for the PUMA I insured that a few months back and even that was not easy and my insurer would only insure if I had a tracker and a Thatcham 2 imobiliser, both which I had fitted anyway. Just as an adage many years ago my late father had a Rover and two years down the line after that company folded by dads insurance went through the roof, in the end he sold it because of insurance difficulties. Sadly, with everything now being computerised, if it doesn't show on their system, I guess they assume it's not 'real'. As such, I suppose you will just have to choose a Defender 90 (ask Bowler what base model they would use for each version you're considering) and then up-value it as a Bowler Special Edition. Then if anything happens, as long as Bowler have supplied you a receipt for your Defender 90 worth (for example) £50,000 then surely you're covered? Why rename it? It's a special edition Defender 90 supplied by a company called Bowler and they charged you 'Fiddy-large'.... Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

As mentioned above give A-Plan a call, I wanted to insure my imported 50th anniversary with an agreed valuation and I tried Flux but got an idiot on the quote line and then tried some of those advertised in the back of the LR mags but couldn't get what I wanted at a reasonable price. So I gave Henry at A-Plan a ring and gave him all the details of what I wanted and he promised to ring back the next day which he did, and managed to sort something out with an agreed value and restricted mileage which is what I was after and the price was really good too. Cheers Ian

+ Another for A-Plan, my Bowler is currently insured with them and it was pretty straight forward. Previously it was insured with LV which was also very easy.

-1 for A-Plan, I'd be extremely reluctant to use them again after their repeated lack of communication and failure to be useful. Always friendly on the phone but not backed up by doing what they said they'd do.
Things might have got better since but they used to only offer policies underwritten by Markerstudy. Markerstudy may have improved but their customer service is/was legendarily terrible. Saved myself a load of money and improve the experienced no end when I moved to Adrian Flux. They actually manage to email me! I don't have a remap but do have plenty of mods and they're fine with that. Can also ring up mid-term and get things added at no cost. |

second that on Adrian Flux, just moved my insurance over to them after they beat A Plans price (though Jamie @ A Plan was very good to deal with too)..
Had been insured with gladiator and changed due them not allowing me to take the defender off road never again! Defender 90 Puma 2.4 |
