I don't think the French do allow that? Best check before you get the engine upgrade as from what I know the power has to match the CoC, if a pre-1997 car, must match what's on file at DIREE.
Pretty much any mod outside of changing the stero will invalidate insurance in France from what I know it's factory spec only allowed law wise regarding engine/ECU. Be careful with that, it only takes one grumpy CT guy to grass on you!

I'm not sure they do allow it, however this being France, if you ignore the rules and do it anyway, chances are you'll get away with it. I learned quite quickly after moving here that you never offer information. If they dont know, they wont bother you about it and usually they dont want to know anyway as that means they have to do some work, which annoys them terribly and then they give you a load of bureaucratic merde.

Merci. Yup, it's been a cause of much discussion on the forum recently. I'm of the view that if I import the car with the new engine in, all correctly registered in the UK, then that becomes the French authorities start point. I did think it might be difficult but then thought that there are loads of imported classics that have had engine upgrades, so as long as it is correctly registered at point of import only from then on can mods not be made. As far as the CofC is concerned, if they can see the engine has been correctly regsitered to the chassis in the UK, then surely it still 'conforms'? After all, when I register it here I will have to pay import/tax/fiscal charges based on the new engine size, as it will be notified to the prefecture and on all documentation. I am sure mods are illegal because as there are no annual road taxes to pay (as per the UK) so in theory anyone could buy a 1l peugeot, pay for it's initial registration and then slap in a V12 which would be avoiding the fiscal tax. By doing it before import it wouldn't. If they don't allow it, I'll have to bite the bullet and keep it UK registered and drive it back to the UK each year. Driving a V8 Defender on empty French autoiroutes back to the UK for an Ale resupply would be a real hassle Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

This is why the only mods I've made are cosmetic. Apart from the wheels that is. Even then, the insurance wont take any of those mods into consideration unless they are genuine JLR accessories fitted by JLR.

Hi Peter

Just doing the same ourselves, but with the one house.

Defender import tax (malice tax) is horrific.

Having issues getting a coc out of renault!! But if no coc it's not all over i believe, it's over to the french who do all the tests etc themselves and declare it conformed. So not all lost.

Are you talking about in terms of them invalidating the insurance or refusing to cover the value of the mods?

Honestly I can tell you from experience that if you don't have a CoC or a cert for an collectors car from FFVE, then you may as well just forget it. It's just not worth it.
There is the RTI route but you will need a lot of money, a lot of time (think 2 years) and you will likely fail it. I hear that it's a 85% fail rate. You'll have to trailer the vehicle around France to get the tests etc done...it's not like the UK Mot where you can drive to a booked one. In the end IF you get a registration you will find you spent more than the difference in getting a French spec and registered one in the first place.

Fair enough. Sounds Grim. Thanks for the heads up.

Having a hard time getting Renault to issue one at the mo. Renault UK just washed their hands of helping and couldn't give a toss. Nice CS. Sad

That and you'd imagine there'd be a glut of Clio3 headlamps knocking about…but no. The hardest thing to find in France is a pair of lamps for my motor.

We will see. Fingers crossed.

They (macif) wont cover the cost of the mods. Crying or Very sad I need to look for an insurer that will.
