Grounding the purple wire will not start up all what is related to heating. ventilation and thermostatic things will still work but the whole heating electronics and parts will not be powered.

In case the wire is not grounded = winter mode (or no summer/winter switch installed) if you start up the webasto while temps are hot enough, the burner will start up and go through its startup procedure and then after very short time switch off again, which is polluting the burning chamber and reducing life. (it is exactly for that reason that a start signal starts a startup sequence which the unit has to complete before the thermostatics or timer can switch it off again. this to make sure fuel is burned completely before you switch off. But it is still better in this case not to switch on at all, therefore the summer/winter switch)

In summer mode the start signal simply does not reach the burner electronics but only signals the ventilation to start working for set thermostatic conditions or timing.

Webasto electronics are quite simple and very modular. Timer = timer, heater = heating, remote control = remote timer.
If not on CANBUS the only relation between heater and its controls is a +12VDC signal to switch on or off the heater (which takes care about the heating procedure only)

So ventilation only, timed, remote controlled or manual in summer mode and Heating in winter mode

hope that helps

thanks again tatra805, makes perfect sense. So I will be fitting the summer/winter switch just so that "little fingers" don't play with the remote Thumbs Up

Belgium 1996 Defender 90 300 Tdi HT Coniston Green
Hello Guys,

I have a Webasto in my Defender (300tdi) and I would like to install a summer/winter switch.
I found this purple wire, not connected to anything, but there was also a brown wire (thinner). The were taped off together (but not connected to each other)

Is this the purple wire that I have to ground to have the summer mode? What does the brown wire do?

Thanks in advance for your help.
