Grease guns and mess
Does anyone have any advice to make greasing UJs any less messy. The UJ at my rear axle is a particular challenge. The grease just oozes out from around the coupling and I don't think much, if any, is going into the joint. The grease nipple is clean and free and the coupler on my gun is fairly new.

Has anyone tried the lock on style couplers you can get? Wondered if the might seal better. Like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0133NDH6E/ref...-xb2ZNTEH0 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I am led to believe (mainly hearsay from the hardcore offroaders) that the best way to grease the UJ's in the propshafts is to removed the propshaft. This apparently takes the loading of the bearings and the grease can flow into all 4 bearing cups. It will still make a mess as that seems to be what grease guns do (both my Blue Point and Hilka do at any rate). Then it will try to coat the underside with whatever has crept out and around the joints, I like to think of this as a free bit of corrossion prevention. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Best way is l have found is too remove excess grease with a rag after greasing. However you will still get a bit of fling whatever you do. I have never removed the propshaft for greasing! I found out that my expensive in warranty main stealer servicing had been only token greasing. Couple of quick pumps to prove they had been there, as a result great difficuly for me too get fresh grease too issue from all cups! Solution for me was the application of sufficient gentle heat on the difficult cup and a gentle tap with a piece of wood on the oppersite side cup. This combined with the pumping of fresh grease all good! Very Happy Thumbs Up it now is a regular thing for me too put the defender on the hoist and give them some fresh grease!

Little and often keeps fresh grease in the bearings. Leave it too long and the grease goes hard and therefore doesn't move easily and so thats why when you grease it only comes out of the nearest bearing to the nipple. Instinctively we do a few more pumps hoping it will come out of the others, knowing really that it won't . And so we have lots of excess grease to wipe up. With G force of prop spinning more excess sprays on underside of vehicle. Not a bad thing except when your arm touches it unknowingly.
The worst stuff is that blue or red grease - should be banned for being aright mess to wipe up.

We have one grease gun with a G Coupler at work and it's fantastic. So much easier to use than a standard push on end and it doesn't fall off. If you've got a blocked grease line then it will still leak from somewhere but it's not usually the G Coupler. The G Coupler is also easier to get off the nipple - sometimes you can get a standard fitting stuck on and they're a right pain to remove especially when everything is covered in grease. On the G Coupler you just squeeze it and it comes off as easy as anything.

Now I don't know whether you'd be able to get it in to a propshaft UJ as it's noticeably bigger than a standard gun end. We do grease the UJs on the drive shaft of one of our bits of machinery with it, but that's got much bigger UJs than a Defender prop shaft.

If you like I can give it a go sometime, my UJs could do with some grease!

I use a Teclamit grease gun with the female end buffed down to a very steep angle for about one third of the end. You are making a mess because the end is not on fully? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Definitely locked on fine, it's like there is some internal blockage in the joint. Have to put loads of pressure on the gun. The nopple is fine, cane poke the ball bearing and grease comes back out. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

This is a common problem if old grease has coagulated in the uj or nipple and won't budge, and doesn't tend to happen if the joint is greased regularly. If the nipple is blocked it cab be replaced, but if it is internal to the uj all you can do really is remove it and either strip and clean it, or simply replace it.

The cause is usually a failure to lubricate sufficiently often, or the use of an unsuitable grease.
