I have a modified North Off-Road Cage.
Click image to enlarge I am not sure what part off the body you want to protect? As most parts that get the most on and off-road damage are not protected. Only cleaning get more difficult. Roel, is that a DAB radio antenna there on your roof? Maybe you should straigthen it a bit more. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I have the safety devices external roll cage on mine. It was the first option on my list after seeing photos of defenders rolling over without cages. The quality of their cages is top notch and they have roof racks, ladders, mounts, etc. if you want to add them later on.

Sorry but I think these external cages look just butt ugly!
Why an iconic shape like a Defender, then surround it with scaffolding ... I just don't get it at all. I am not even convinced about the effectiveness of it in a big smash either. Yes the Defender roof is like cheese... but so were many other car roof's years ago when it was designed. Just accept it as it is, or buy a 'modern' vehicle, designed by computers, made with high strength steel and has undergone all the current crash protection testing that ensures a stable roof in the event of a roll-over etc. Or if you must, fit an internal SD system that would tick the desire for some additional protection... All IMHO! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

@YOLO110
No need to apologise, it is a matter of taste. Many people see the "iconic shape" of the defender as the ugliest thing on wheels. Personally, I'd rather have an ugly roll cage in a roll over after seeing the below images. I would have put an internal one in the defender if I could. The problem is the space in a defender is so tight, I could only fit myself in it after changing the steering wheel to a smaller one and installing seat rails to gain some room. After that, there was no room left to fit a roll cage. I think that is why you see mostly external roll cages on defenders as opposed to other 4x4s. |

Yup, good advice there YOLO, fit an internal cage and turn the cage into a head injury hazard in the event of an accident !
It's not the roof that's weak in the defender, that's relatively strong with form and stiffening. The weak part is the cast aluminium windscreen frame. This has very little strength and nearly always collapses in the event of a rollover allowing the roof to compress down onto the vehicle's front passengers. See the middle photo above and compare it to the bottom one ! Anyone who thinks you should just live with this weakness is a fool. IMHO 😊 I had a Bowler cage on my last 90 and have an SD external cage on my current 90. Any future acquisitions will be likewise equipped. No need for Sarcasm mate!
If an interior cage was deemed to be a hazard, it would certainly not achieve FIA approval Quote from Bowler about their interior cage... The interior has also been overhauled for competition use. Bowler is keen for the Defender Challenge cars to compete outside of the designated events so it has been built to comply with all MSA and FIA off-road racing regs. To that end, there’s an MSA-approved cage and fire extinguisher, plus racing seats with six-point harnesses. That is what I would buy if looking to install ROPS in my Defender... I think we all make our own choices regarding vehicle safety... I don't drive a Volvo and don't wear a helmet with a HANS device either... But if we all did these things as well, there would be even less injuries as a result of RTA's YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Weird ol' thing is taste. Here's me liking the look of SD external cages and considering one almost for the aesthetics - and at the same time preferring more standard looking winch bumpers and IMHO it looks like there is some scaffolding on the front of your vehicle You've likely got the bumper like that for good reason though so ... heh, not sure what I'm saying Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Forgive me if I point out the obvious YOLO but that's a motorsport vehicle, the sort where they have to wear a crash helmet all the time. Not particularly convenient for a road going vehicle methinks.

Exactly that ^^^
I was at the Mull Rally last year, unfortunately a guy lost his life as his helmet was not fastened and it came off in a roll, it was the head impact with the cage that resulted in the loss of his life. |
