Shattered
A few years back I think there were threads on here about tailgate glass shattering, but I don’t think there was a definite answer as to why this was happening.

Lots of theories but no definite answer. Well mine went a couple of days ago, No rime nor reason, parked up on the drive at the time, got back in from a job. Glass ok as I got stuff out from the back went back out about ten minutes later and this.

My rear glass was the older style (2009 Puma) with the heater elements running under the brake light.

Looking at the shattered window it looks like the shattering originated from an area on the right hand side of the brake light. I don’t recall anything hitting the glass or any rough treatment other than normal driving.

Autoglass came out to it and replaced it with the latest glass which has the elements running round the brake light. I was talking to the Autoglass fitter and he said he had replaced a few Defender rear door glass panels, and every one had the same shatter pattern i.e. emanating from the same area next to the brake light.

So could this be linked to the cause of the breakage? And is this why Landrover changed the design of the heater elements. I wish I knew the definite answer.

Regard to all.

Fletch.

That's exactly what mine looked like when it shattered whilst all alone on the drive. I can't say which glass I had but mine is a 2011 model.

Land Rover changed the design of the heater elements because the casing of the brake light was wearing through the tracks on the original design. Darren

^^ Correct. With mine LR replaced the rear door glass three times in warranty due to the two top heating wires being cut by the third brake light. And each time the issue reappeared. Then they saw the light and rerouted the top heating elements to run under the brake light. So when they replaced the glass a fourth time, but now with this new version, they got it right. That one still works a treat at 8 years.

There must be some residual stress left in the glass from manufacturing. It's a bit ironic though that this seems to happen on the simplest bit of glass in the automotive industry.

Unsure - what I do know is that it's pretty disgraceful given that many of us carry dogs and or children in the back! Landrover as usual are uninterested.

Nearly fell off my chair when this arrive in my inbox - worth pursuing for what's it's worth? If so can anyone advise if there is an upgrade to the light and or wiring which according to research is the root cause of the window shattering. Window however has now been replaced. Cheers all

Don't panic everyone - normal service resumed.Rang my local dealer and apparently they have never heard of this happening before and effectively asked "what do you want me to do about it?"
