Never broken one of either

I have found SGS Engineering jacks, axle stands, wheel dolleys and presses to be of very good quality, also with fast delivery.
Their air tools and compressors look good but I haven't tried them (yet). |

Of the well known makes, personally I rate Snap On, Teng, and Facom as being in the top league, but you do of course have to pay for the quality.
Britool and King Dick used to be professional quality but have now retargetted to the consumer market with disappointing results. (Britool is the "cheap" division of Facom, so whilst not rubbish are nothing like the quality that they used to be. I can't remember who owns KD now). Middle league stuff in my book. Halford Professional are surprisingly good and are backed by an excellent warranty. For budget-priced tools they are quite hard to beat, and good enough for most people. I'd put them towards the top of the middle league. Draper used to be rubbish but have improved and the Professional range is now upper middle league. Sykes Pickavant is in the same league for special tools as Snap On etc. For cordless power tools, my current preference is for the latest generation Milwaukee, which I find to be in a league of their own. Power tool users tend to be heavily invested and quite brand-loyal though, because of the investment in batteries. If you want a serious high power cordless impact wrench, a Maxim Master 35 is hard to beat, but it does get rather heavy if you're using it for a prolonged period and they are massively expensive! OTT for a Defender. Remember tools are highly personaly things, and asking the OP's question is a little bit like asking "what are the best tyres for my Defender". You're unlikely to get a single answer, but will get many opinions, some of which will be similar, from which you can make up your own mind. Remember also the old adage that a cheap tool is more expensive in the long run. |

Cheap tools are a complete pain and are irritating to use.
I've had stuff from these guys before and been happy: http://www.onlyqualitytools.com/ Sockets I have two sets from Bacho which I like. I bought the second (larger) set after being happy with a few years quite frequent use of a smaller set. It's definitely preferable to the Draper Expert set I've got, although not as shiny. Unusually the Bahco is 6 pointed rather than 12 which I think is better. The Wera stuff I've had is nice, particularly a 1/4" ratchet, but is too pricey for larger sets for me. I've got various cheap spanners which are horrible. Cheap non-horrible (but not as nice as good ones) the Silverline stuff is acceptable enough, but their ratchets are complete junk and you might as well just buy a decent socket set by the time you've had to replace the ratchet with one that works. But that doesn't help with the question about the "big" things like jacks, hoists and stands. I've used a set of Halfords 2t folding stands that I borrow from my neighbour but I don't really like them. I'd like a set of half decent, not too expensive ratchet stands and maybe a bottle jack to go with them. A trolley jack isn't much use on a gravel drive. Cheap bottle jacks that I've used are OK, nothing to get excited about though! Watch out for what they've got on the top, whether it's a pad or a saddle. |

Knipex for anything pliers related Swiss Tool for anything screwdriver or allen, torx Halfords Professional for Spanners and Sockets (although the Professional was better than the Advanced in my opinion) Gedore for Spanners and Sockets Bosch 18V Professional for cordless Impact, Drill, Grinder etc Sykes Pickavant for Special Tools Halford Professional for Torque Wrench 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP 2011 Puma Defender 130 D/C 2000 300tdi Defender 110 P/UP 2015 Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE |
