Hydraulic rear door opener

I fitted this kit today, it comes with a hydraulic ram, two brackets and assorted bits and pieces. Replaces the standard rear door check arm.

Took half an hour to fit. What a good idea! The door opens by itself when you release the catch, and comes to a stop before the spare wheel hits the bodywork (this is adjustable)
It even opens by itself when the Defender is facing downhill. When it's facing uphill the door opens with a damped action and no longer swings open against your arm, and it also stays open when you are parked on a kerb (the check arm wouldn't hold it and it kept closing while l was trying to get my tools out)
I'd recommend this modification, although it's £50 l think it is worth it. Obviously only needed if your spare wheel is on the back door.

A glowing review! I'm looking at getting one of these for the very same reasons. Which one did you go for? 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

The Britpart one....l didn't know there was a choice of makes.
But it's fine. The ram is a German made unit and the other parts are good quality.

You will need a rivet gun to fit it, and the rivets are steel not aluminium so if you've a cheap rivet gun you'll need strong arms to do it....l had to use a g-clamp on the rivet gun to finish them off!
