Transmission oil
Having trouble finding suitable transmission oils for my 1999 110. The usual suspects shrug their shoulderswhen I mention MTF.

Any idea of stockists? 1999 Td5 110 CSW

LR do it...genuine article though may cast approx. £50 for 5 litres but that's enough for two changes so it becomes £25 per refil Shocked

Personally I use the Fuchs alternative will drag out the details of it tomorrow. Never been a fan of MTF94. I find it ruins the shifts and if you sample it the wear rates are terrible. Worse than running ATF ironically

As you're in high Wycombe, speak to dingocroft. I'm pretty certain they sourced it for me last time I needed it.

Given that LR are so adamant that it should only be MTF94, how do you know that the fuchs stuff is definitely good for the box? Genuine question, I don't like the shifting on my (refurb) r380 at the moment.

FWIW - this is the Service Advisory:

Quote:

Defender Date: 25.11.98
Freelander
AFFECTED RANGE:
All R380 manual gearbox derivatives - refer to text for specific change points
All Freelander
PROBLEM:
GEARBOX OIL - CHANGE TO SPECIFICATION
CAUSE:
At the following VINs, the original oil fill specification for the R380 gearbox was changed to Texaco MTF94 high performance oil:
Range Rover - WA 384300
Discovery - WA 752315
Defender - WA 131138
New Discovery - All vehicles
The Freelander PG1 gearbox has used the new oil since introduction of the model.
ACTION:
MTF94 will be recognised by its orange/honey colour as opposed to the red
Dexron II oil previously used, and is now available from Land Rover Parts.
It is now the only oil which should be used for topping up and complete fill on R380/PG1 gearbox applications.
The new oil is compatible with the old and to enable earlier vehicles to benefit from
its introduction, should be used retrospectively on vehicles prior to the above VINs
for all top up and refill requirements.
Refer to PARTS INFORMATIONoverleaf for details.
Until further notice, current Service Schedule gearbox oil change periods are retained and must be adhered to.

Things have moved on a little since 1998 Very Happy

I sample oils as we have an oil lab in work so makes sense to me. The wear rates with MTF are not the best by any means. This is just my findings. I'm not saying don't use it, just that there are better lubricants for similar and sometimes less money. Fuchs Titan sintofluid 75 80 is just my preference.

Just my 2p worth...

Well, glad I asked! Oil lab is convincing enough for me. When I change my gearbox next I'll get some

I too am interested in hearing more Fatboy Slim Thumbs Up

I've been using the LR MTF94 for some time with no issues, other than cost and occasional availability, however I am keen to embrace change as long as it is for the better.

Fuchs products are excellent, and as long as the spec is spot on then I can't see why it shouldn't be a bonafide alternative.

Looking forward to hearing more Thumbs Up
