After a bit of advice on a problem I have with front brake discs.
Two years ago new Delphi discs were fitted on my TD5, new pads etc and they were fine until last December when they were found they had gone out of true (hate to use the term warp !) . Garage put new discs on and pads (do not know the make of disc but it was certainly not s***part ! They appear to have gone again after 3000 miles, bad judder when braking. Have I just been unlucky or is there something else that I should be checking when I fit new discs ? Bushes etc seem fine but one thing I am suspicious of is I did have a sticking caliper last year, could this be part of the problem if it is sticking again ? Vehicle stops in a straight line, no pulling to one side, just a very bad judder. I can also hear a sound of something catching/brushing on each wheel rotation that goes when the brakes are applied and it is this that makes me thing the discs are shot again. I am fitting EBC discs this time and LR pads. Thanks Richard.
I am going to price up a set of genuine discs to see what the difference in cost is. The original discs lasted 13 years and I only replaced that as there was some corrosion on them, wish I hadn't bothered ! I will go and take a look to see if there is any delamination. I've used britpart cross drilled and grooved discs both solid and vented on various defenders and d2's and never had a problem, always used ebc green stuff pads as well

Sort of makes you think to replace the calipers or the flexi brake lines first.

Before replacing them, if there is still plenty of wear left in them, get them machined in situ. Most decent garages have access to a machine that is bolted to the hub and grinds the disc level again. If you replace them the same could happen again. A friend had it done on his Toyota a few years back and no problems since.

I'd drop the wheels off, and try a dial gauge to check disc run out, you want a little bit to move the pads back off the discs after braking, I cannot find the spec we used to use on the trailing axle on TACR2's, but it was a few thou. Don't forget to put the wheel nuts on and torqued to the correct setting.
If there is a run out take the discs off and check the mating surfaces for cleanliness and the hub for running true. Another cause can be the wrong torque on wheel nuts. Good luck Keith |

Thanks for all the advice.
It does look like a caliper has stuck on one side, one of the pads stays clear of the disc when the pedal is pressed. Also found at least one flange bolt not tightened up so it makes me wonder what other horrors are lurking ! Before getting new discs I think I will strip both sides, put them back correctly and test the run out. It looks like new calipers are needed anyway but I think the disc problem may be due to bad workmanship by the garage that did the job. I will let you know how things progress !!
