Tacho fitting - where to get it done for a reasonable price?
Been quoted £2,000 to get a tacho fitted to a 2011 Defender 110. Can anyone please recommend a supplier who can do this for a more reasonable price?

That was the source of my £2k quote. Looking for experience of anyone who's had it done before - particularly by a Land Rover specialist? Justification for cost was 10 hours removing vehicle pieces to fit the kit - someone who knows Defenders better would do it much quicker.

Hi John, first welcome to the forum.

Secondly if you need a tacho fitted to comply with towing regulations you may well struggle to find a Defender specialist who has the experience and the approval to fit and calibrate a tacho.

A tacho has to be fitted by a qualified approved DVLA/VOSA and has to be recalibrate do every two years.

What does the £2,000 include? VAT? Mounting box etc?

You can now mount a tacho in a radio chubby box.

You can save some money by installing the power wiring loom yourself. Please be aware this loom wiring code might not be the same as a typical Defender wiring loom.

Brendan,

It seems difficult to find an approved tacho centre that has experience doing Defenders such that they can quote any specifics over the phone, or indeed commit on a definitive price or turnaround time in advance. Most of them are commercial truck servicing operations. We're now stuck with a need for a quick turnaround (1 week) and can't find anyone to do it in that timescale, even forgetting cost for now. Open to any options right now.

Rogers of Bedford are fairly close to you, give them a ring as they deal with a lot of commercial Land Rovers and may be able to point you in the right direction

£1500 - £2000 is a typical price for a retro fit Tacho.

It is quite an involved job HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

Thanks all for the advice. Eventually I found Tacho-Fit Express in Birmingham who quoted £950+VAT and could do it in 4-5 hours at a few days notice.. some extra miles to get there but worth it for effectively while-you-wait service.. booked in for Monday, I'll post an update about the end result.
