My crystal ball is on the blink so I'm afraid I am unable to tell what speedo drive gear you have fitted.

For a 1989 Land Rover 90 the standard tyre size would have been 205R16, with 7.50R16 an option. Out of the factory it will have had the speedo drive gear to suit the tyres it was fitted with. Since that was 26/27 years ago it may also have been changed since then. 235/85/16 are more or less the same overall diameter as the 7.50R16, so the drive gear for the latter will suit.

Your vehicle has Discovery wheels fitted - what size are the tyres on there at the moment? If they're narrower than 235 section then fitting that size may mean you need to adjust the steering stops to prevent rubbing on full lock as the new tyres will be wider. If (for example) your current tyres are 235/75/16 then chances are you will be okay, but you simply won't know for sure unless you try it.

The tyres will fit with no problems, especially with spacers, so just do it and then worry about adjusting the lock stops or speedo drive afterwards if it is necessary. Neither adjustment is particularly difficult.

Fit the tyres if you want them, then if things need adjusting come back to us and we can point you in the right direction.

To answer your question in the most simplistic manner, yes if you replace like-for-like then that will not affect the speedo.

But is the 265/75/16 tyre width too WIDE for a 6.5J Wolf Wheel?

It is 3cm wider than the 235... (1.2 inches wider)... Question Question YOLO... You Only Live Once...
