2.4 gearbox oil level
Could someone confirm the capacity for the gearbox from an 07 2.4 puma after draining as I have just done mine and taken out over 4L yes 4L, I thought it should have been 2.2L that came out, no wonder I had a slight oil leak form the bell housing lol.

Put in 2.2lts (Service Fill)...this must be a measured quantity...
NOT filled until it runs from the filler plug... Exclamation
(Looks like a previous service maybe did just that... Shocked )

Yes, I measured out 2.2L exactly to go back in to the gear box I only had 3L in the first place and have almost a full litre bottle left.

Last time the gearbox was touched it was by a Land Rover main dealer when they replaced the clutch back in 2011, I think I might be having a chat with them on Monday.

I wouldn't waste my breath if I were you. I had a new transfer box under warranty and specifically asked the workshop foreman at the stealers to ensure the adaptor shaft was greased while it was out. "It is not a service item" he said in a curry take-away voice......
Recently I had the adaptor shaft changed and guess what, lots of red rust and worn splines with no evidence of grease ever having been on it!
What sort of mechanics do they employ in the factory or dealers who put these things together? I was going to approach them about it but really don't think it's worth even asking why even though my handbook says what type of grease should be used!

Why pay a fortune and have idiots work on your car? Do it yourself, at least then you know it's done right.

Though the new gearbox design doesn't make it easy, a level plug is fairly idiot proof in the grand scheme of things. Measured quantities requires someone with more than two brain cells to rub together to actually read the manual - a quality not possessed by many 'service technicians'.

How does 4L even get in there? Impressive.

Does the volume get that much wider in the area between the 2.2l level and the fill plug?

Did they fill it with the vehicle on an incline?? Shocked Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

That's why I do all my basic servicing. The independent mechanic who does things like the shaft change is very good, but I'd rather do those things I can like oil changes, while I still can.
If I had a pit in the garage it would make things easier but as I haven't I'm quite willing to pay his price and know the jobs been done right.
The stealer gets nothing from me.

Yes it will fit,
All I can think of is they double filled it !!! like you say if it was a level plug the land rover mechanic (looses sense of the term) would have seen it was pouring out and realised his mistake.

This is what came out the green Castrol container is full to the top

Always do my own oil changes. Never had a new defender, so no main dealers experiences. First thing I do is change all the oils when I buy a Defender, using the correct specifications. The previous owner of my Puma 2.4 had a couple of vans in his business and used a local garage to service his L/R also. When I took out the gearbox filler plug, the old oil gushed out. I estimate there was about 3.5 litres in there. Clearly the garage wasn't up to speed with Puma gearbox oil capacity.

Since we're on the topic I'll ask a couple of tangential questions:

- If you have a vehicle that is new to you, or one that you may suspect a leak (when warm etc.) how can you check the level is correct?(I remember putting in a cable tie as a dip stick after I filled it and it was less than an inch from the fill plug, but I've since lost that measurement...)

- What are the short-term/long-term effects on the gearbox if you overfill it? It's not simply redundant cost is it? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Over filling can be as bad as under filling or running on low oil, having lost (leaked) its correct quantity.

Drain Plug to Fill Plug = Correct Quantity Thumbs Up
The simple approach of removing the fill plug first (so you know you can refill it... Exclamation )
then removing the drain plug...and then filling up to the fill plug is a fairly full proof method and its a shame the Puma MT82 Gearbox doesn't follow this long established 'general' approach... Shocked

Too much oil can lead to excessive pressures within a gearbox, with overheating problems.

Best and clearest advice I read, was within the instructions for my Cement Mixer...
