I think LR are seriously out of touch with why people love the defender and buy them . That special edition is horrible, should be called drug dealer special editon lol . It doesn't make any sense. Would Levi jeans stop making 501 denim and start making their trousers from multi-colored silk. Or would coke redesign their iconic logo ! It would be great to see a LR dop it's cap and pay tribute to it's past (and present) and build a Safari SE or Olde England SE or Adventure SE etc etc Defenders are actually used for doing real things in not posing on the kings road !!! I've calmed down now

I think there is a middle ground, it's just that LR seem to focus on the wrong things. For example, instead of experimenting with exterior paint combinations, why don't they offer credible, premium options on the interior and if they must, slightly tweak the exterior in subtle ways, without screwing up the overall look of the Defender, which people generally admire. For example, optional tan or light grey leather seats/trim (not Recaro sports seats), real metal finished console dash areas, better sound systems, an additional rear sunrooof, matt external paint etc. None of these things would negatively impact on the no-nonsense image of the Defender (at street level), but the options would likely bring-in more customers who want a rugged go-anywhere vehicle with an element of comfort. And for those who see these things as merely bling, they simply don't tick the options boxes.

It does seem hard to escape the bling with modern defenders, you can always spec up a base model with the nice interior tweaks, but its the long way round to avoid alloys, silver grille etc, and you lose the inside carpeting. I can see the appeal of comfort and maybe nice alloys, but beyond that I just don't get it. 2011 110 USW

Totally agree Rick and 2900, the options list on even the XS reads like the standard equipment list on most cars these days. I wanted a defender like my dad had when I was a kid but with modern driving appeal. Hence I recently brought a Puma XS station wagon in Keswick green. I've ditched the alloys for steels and looking to get the roof sprayed White/cream. Also looking to get a galvanised bumper. Just surprised you can't spec the car how you want. If I wanted a colour coded modern looking 4x4 I wouldn't buy a defender I'd buy a freelander or discovery. There's only three non metallic colours to choose from..so two sides of the coin are wrong. On one side if you want a classic looking defender with reasonable comfort levels it's difficult and if you want a super duper defender the options list is too short. But if you want a defender to look like a space rocket your catered for ie that special edt lol
