That doesn't mirror my experience.
There is no switch telling it that you're in gear. It will do it if you're not in gear and you just roll down a hill slightly, and will also do it whilst slipping the clutch in second if you manage to get the revs so it thinks it's in first. |

Normal stationary idle speed is 800 rpm.
The vehicle moving (rolling or in gear, clutch in or out) activates a raised idle speed, which is 900 rpm if high ratio is selected, and 1100 rpm if low ratio is selected. The ECU probably gets wheel movement info through an ABS sensor, and the hi/lo info through the second switch on the box. The combination decides whether 800, 900 or 1100 rpm is required. I bet thereīs something amiss with the connection to the hi/lo switch. It is a combination of the clutch switch as well as the high low switch on the transfer box that turns on idle jack, it is turned off by the speedometer transponder as has already been said. In this case it will be the high low switch that is at fault or the positive cable leading to it is shorting. If the clutch switch is fault you get a distinctive rev hang between gear changes in the 2.4 as well as surging just after changing gear under heavy acceleration

Not useful knowledge, but I always wish that there was a way of doing idle jack in neutral so that I can use it as a power heater / warmup!! Cheers, David

Does the Puma not do the same as the TD5 ? On the TD5, if the ECU thinks it's in low box it stops you exceeding 30MPH, lighting up the engine warning light and cutting engine power. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

davew: I've driven fairly quickly in low 6th and it hasn't complained at me yet. I know I should have changed up but I'm not very good at on the move range changes and it tends to make a rather alarming bang.
Me too! but for other purposes. I was wondering if I could change the inputs of my cruise control to an RPM signal to have a cruise activated high idle. |

Does the Puma not do the same as the TD5 ? On the TD5, if the ECU thinks it's in low box it stops you exceeding 30MPH, lighting up the engine warning light and cutting engine power. -Never tried it but I doubt it, -The puma behaves differently at low speeds due to the extremely low first gear ratio hence needing idle jack to avoid loss of control in hill descents |

Not possible, I'm afraid, though heaven knows why LR didn't make this possible (like many Jap 4x4s). The ECU will shut down the throttle input if you increase the idle when stationary, eg if you want to increase engine speed when winching. For the Td5 there was an optional hand throttle available as a factory fit for the extortionate sum of about Ģ1200, but never as far as I know for the Puma. The daft thing is that a software mod and one switch would probably do it, but without access to the programming data it would be very difficult. I don't know of any aftermarket solutions either. |
