Guys. Need to buy my daughter a lap top asap and would like to shop at John Lewis again. I bought my eldest daughter an i3 lenova yoga touch screen laptop which seems to tick the right boxes only it discontinued now. The new equivalent gets rubbish reviews. Any thoughts on what to get for £300-500?
Many thanks. |

What some person likes some one won't but I would say that at least base your choice on a good processor something like an AMD A10 series or the Intel Core I3 / I5 family for good task wise. Chiefly a decent RAM allowance would be a high priority, this is the main working 'Power' of the laptop and something like 8 - 12GB will allow it to perform even when running a few programmes. Windows 10 isn't a massive RAM hog but IMHO some of them advertising only 4GB wouldn't giver much room to say running a few webpages, streaming video and a e.g. a word package could cause it to bog down and slow.
Whilst you want to buy from john lewis if there is one that takes you eye give it a quick google as some different retailers might A do it cheaper or B offer a slightly different set up with variations including HDD sizing and RAM variations. It is a baffaling and huge market. |

I haven't checked the current policy but John Lewis used to do a price match.

Er... Very naughty!!! Partner Discount is only 12% on anything with a plug on it and is only applicable to the Partner and their family - if they use their discount to provide a benefit to a third party they risk losing their right to discount (which includes Waitrose and a more generous allowance on non-electrical items in John Lewis...) and there could / would be issues in the event of any warranty claim which needs to be supported by an invoice and therefore presented by the Partner... Still... John Lewis is a jolly good place to go for your laptop - hope you get sorted Caterham!!! |

hmmm.
had another look on the jl website and this; http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-yoga-500-c...lour=Black appears to be the closest thing to my other daughters which has been just fine (I also have a Lenova which appears to be fine). problem with the above is the reviews go from complete rubbish to excellent? anyway got any recommendations on the best antivirus type software - best performer / cost. |

I haven't. I do admire the Apple products but also despise them also - hate the fact they don't just use industry standard connectors and 'bloody' iTunes
also need to get something comparable to my other daughters otherwise I'll never hear the end of it |

Don't forget to look on Amazon - the Lenovo Yoga laptops on there get pretty good reviews - and offers savings above John Lewis.
On the Apple front, the connectors they come up with tend to end up becoming industry standard because they are well though and designed The new USB-C connector is based on the Apple Lightening connector etc And Apple are currently doing Back-to-school offers, and if you kids go to the College (16 and above) with the NUS type card thing, you get 15% Apple prices and 3years of Applecare (free repairs) included in the price 2013 Aintree Green 110 Station Wagon SX |

Mixed reviews, yes, but doesn't your other daughter have a similar model, that has been fine. I think you could look at all best selling laptops or any other consumer device and will find negative reviews. I have used Mcaffee anti virus for a few years now with no issues. Just a quick one to say that whenever possible I buy all my tech from either John Lewis, Costco or Apple. All are incredible for returns and service. Probably Costco best, we return stuff all the time and they just do cash refun over the counter no quibbles.
Worth looking in Costco as saving can sometimes be much greater than the cost of membership on single item. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |
