2003 TD5 Double Cab - Running / Starting problems
Hi All

Here is a overview of the issue I'm having...

The truck has been a bit sluggish a couple of times when driving for the first mile or so, almost like a rev limiter was on.

Last might I reversed onto the driveway (doing my usual 5 point turn as I live in a village with narrow road and short, steep driveway) and it stalled just as I got it on the drive.

I then tried to re-start it to move it back a little but it wouldn't start. Turned over but didn't even attempt to fire up.

Tried again around an hour later and it went after a little hesitation.

This morning it started first time but was running like a bag of spanners, was not running on all cylinders and took about 10 minutes of slow driving round the village before it started running okay.

Then dropped my daughter off at school and it wouldn't re-start. Again, left it for 15 minutes and it started with some hesitation.

When it does run there is a dead spot at low revs before it runs properly. I'm getting that feeling of turbo lag then it lurches forward.

There is no obvious signs of trouble in the engine bay or underneath, can't see any leaks. Just a stronger smell of exhaust gasses than normal.

Any thoughts??

Try bleeding the fuel system, ignition on and depress throttle 5 times fully, elm light will flash and fuel pump will run for about 5 mins. It may be getting air in the fuel system or possibly the in tank pump.
If it's air it could be the injector seals. 90 300 TDI SW (sold)

Where is the MAF located? Don't have manual yet! That would be ironic as that's currently the problem I have with my 900.

Just tried starting it from cold, fired first time.

As has been said maf first but definitely worth doing injector seals and washers as when these go it lets fuel run back and if your getting a white puff of smoke on start up usual a good sign of the problem 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

When reversing particularly with a trailer or up a slope I used to stick my old td5 in low box, I found it a lot better.

One thought with you being on a slope is fuel level, my disco td5 which is parked on a slight slope would not start if the fuel light had been on for only 10 or so miles when parked. The pump was a bit lazy so I went for a new genuine one, found the old pump was a non gen and heard of a couple of times that non gen pumps all seemed to do the same when running low on fuel

Disconnected the MAF and bled the fuel pump, made no difference Big Cry

Very rough on idle, lots of white smoke.

Head gasket?

I wouldn't jump to HG just yet. Check Injector seals and also stick your hand behind the FPR. Check for any leaking etc. Or clamber underneath and check with a torch down behind and below where it sits.

Generic thought process for white smoke IMO of course:

Low Fuel Pressure (anything from Pump, to Seals)
Faulty Glows (though the TD5 doesn't have such a requirement on glow plugs as some diesels IMO ...)
Possibly Turbo Issues
Low Compression (this is a last option if all else doesn't fix it)

Few other bits and bobs, but not usually TD5 issues.

Out of interest, have you checked for oil in loom in case your injectors are getting dodgey signals?

Are you a 10P or 15P engine (Assuming 15P on a 2003, though still plenty of reasons it could be a 10P in 2003)?

I'm going to go with fuel somewhere along the line.

fuel presser regulator leak , driver side back engine, ruff idling can all so be oil in red ecu plug, stronger smell of exhaust gasses, did it small of diesel ?

you six mouth warranty Question

2003 engine 15P ease way to check do you have pipe running from the fuel presser regulator to the front of the cylinder head this fuel retune from injectors on 15p engine fuel system
