So an idea just cropped up after my new halfshafts arrived...
I mated them up with the flanges (new also) to see how much backlash they'll have from new - quite a bit! Which got me thinking, why not fill up the gap with something elastic to take up a bit of the shock? Lo and behold: http://www.loctite.co.uk/loctite-4087.htm?nodeid=8802627715073 Questions: 1. Anyone used this? 2. Anyone used from new? If so, which way would you bias the splines when applying it? Centre/average or already pushed in the forward drive position? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

It's not cheap though, will get 50ml and see how far it goes. It's pretty much a crappy weld. Although it's no where as critical as in weld I'm now thinking about how I'm going to line them up nicely ... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

I experimented with Loctite on the rear driving members' splines: Loctite 648 on the left side and Loctite 660 + Loctite 7649 activator on the right side. The cure time was about 6 hrs (there was a need to drive then). The result was negative - backlash returned after two days of driving on Russian "roads". The inspection showed little compound debris on driving member and half-axle, I cleaned them with a wire brush, greased and reassembled.
I plan to retry this experiment with 24 hrs cure time and larger amount of Loctite 2 weeks later. |

How did you centre the spline in the flange?
I think that, just like in a weld, having them centred (same axis) is critical. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

I just moved flange close to circlip. My driving members are new and halfshafts are not badly worn, so there's almost no radial play in this splined joint, only slight tangential one. The first time, I didn't remove halfshafts, just applied Loctite on prepared splines, installed driving member and wheel on the vehicle and left Landy alone (~15hrs one side, ~4hrs another). The second time I removed both halfshafts, cleaned, degreased, applied Loctite on halfshaft, placed driving member on halfshaft, quickly installed circlip and positioned driving member as close to the circlip as possible, then fixed halfshafts vertically and left them for ~6 hours. I think, the problem is lack of Loctite 660 between the splines - large amount was pressed out, when I fitted driving member. The next time I will use more Loctite, distribute it better and apply heat to the joint (it will increase the rate of cure, according to http://www.loctite.sg/sea/content_data/937...mpound.pdf ). |
