I still use Castrol LM, but it's very difficult to find now. Big Cry

Fortunately I have a reasonable stock.

Euro Car parts do a lithium ep grease for not much money, designed for wheel bearings. Holding up fine in mine at least!

If it rotates, lithium based; if it slides (king pins etc.), molybdenum based - that 'orrible black stuff that gets everywhere. But I've yet to hear of anyone greasing a prop-shaft sliding joint with moly.

Until today, that is!

Wheel bearings
Thanks for that, found some Castrol LM so that's sorted. Now the problem is do I have the right bearing? I called LR Centre and asked what I need as their website wasn't clear (to me anyway), they assured me I needed DA2381G which I ordered but it says on the box wheel bearing kit def 94 on and inside it has a pair of bearings, oil seal 5 bolts, cap, 2 nuts tab washer, circlip and a gasket. Now I'm sure I read somewhere that the newer hubs only had one nut so is the wrong kit? You might think I should just strip it down and find out myself but I can only have the Landie of the road for the day as it is constant use so I want to make sure I have everything I need before I tackle it. Thanks.

Yep, you have the earlier Defender kit. TD5 onwards models have a spacer between the bearings for correct float, and a single locknut that torques on.

The kit you have will do the job, some people revert back to the two nut system so they can re-adjust bearing float as required... personally I think the later one nut system is not only correct but more precise reliable. Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Thanks Dave, I thought that was the case. I'll give them a call tomorrow and get it changed.

Wheel bearing
Just started to do this wheel bearing and been baulked by the caliper bolts. What was wrong with hex bolts? Can anyone tell me what size those torx bolts are just been to Halfords bought a set and none were big enough.

If it's these bolts that you mean ISTR that they're are 13mm double hex. You need a 12point socket or ring spanner. They can be bas**rd tight too. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Can be rounded off when torquing up to the spec required in this application. 12 point much less so... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Just fitted the bearings old tyle, should I have letf the spacer out of the middle between the bearings as I can't get the splined cover on now using the two nuts? *** Panic over I worked it out. This kit must be a mixture of the two, should have looked at the nuts more closely. Just put the spacer back in the middle left out thatt thin nut that came with the kit and all fits correctly.
