There are still plenty knocking about but it really depends how much work you want to be doing to it.
You have to at least think about doing it yourself or at worst getting mates to do it otherwise you're looking at spending loads paying for other folk's time. Ones that are decent but need a bit of love are going up in value but still ok (I consider mine in that bracket) but then if you get to the likes of YSL199 then you need to be ready to get the wallet open wide! |

I've done just over 500 miles now and was checking and topping up the levels. The gearbox needed a tiny bit of oil but the engine needed another good slug of 20w50.
Having used up all the Millers Classic Sport 20w50 I had I decided to try some Halfords Classic 20w50. The Millers is a semi-synthetic and although it is the right viscosity I am not convinced it was the best choice for a Series. Rather than mixing mineral and semi-synthetic, I drained out the Millers and re-filled with Halfords Classic 20w50. What a difference! I could immediately hear that the engine was running much more quietly, there is less smoke from the breather and I haven't yet had a puff of smoke from the exhaust when starting the engine. There is a lot of positive feedback on Halfords site about this oil and I can certainly relate to this. It smells nicer too! |

+1 for the Halfords classic. Still haven't worked out where the oil goes, though, since it isn't all over the driveway....

I have only just started reading this thread.
A 2a is one of the best Land Rovers ever built. Here's a pic of my 1962 2a at work : [i ![]() Click image to enlargemg] There's a Discovery 200tdi under the bonnet, 3.54 diffs, remote brake servo and Defender seats. Did you know there's more room inside the truck cab of a 2a than the truck cab of my TD5 110 County pick up? I've owned this for 11 years and I'm only the 4th owner from new. The friend I bought it from had owned it for 17 years and he bought it from the second owner who had himself owned it since 1970 and he in turn had bought it from it's original owner. I make no apology for the 200tdi conversion - it transforms a Series 2. The 48000 mile original 2.25 petrol engine is carefully stored.[/img] |
