Switch to disable ABS
Hi,

I recently bought a defender 110 XS and had a custom switch which I had not a clue what it was for, I have traced the electrics and it appears to be connected to a relay switch which then disables / enables ABS by removing electrics from the fuse.

Hopefully a quick question, when would it be beneficial to have the ABS disabled and would it be best just to remove the extra wiring and put the fuse back in it's normal place? I believe you need to turn off the ignition and then disable the ABS via the switch before turning on the ignition again, re-enabling can be done with the engine running.

Thank you,

They have wired it across Fuse 1 in the battery junction box, the switch on the dash simply removes the current going to the fuse, I think this simply disables ABS from operating completely.

Sometimes it helps to have the ABS off when on snow or gravel. The theory being is that due to low grip on these surfaces, the ABS kicks in very early and the wheels dont stop - hence you dont stop. With ABS off, the snow/gravel can build up infront of the locked wheel and stop you sooner.

Ive never tried it (turning abs off), but do know that ABS on snow/ice means you never stop....I slid into a nice dry stone wall that way many years ago... Embarassed

Makes sense, will need to give it a try on some gravel with both to see what happens before I decide to rip it out.

I recall that the early Quattros had a switch to disable the ABS for precisely this reason, an experienced driver can stop a car quicker in snow etc without ABS.

not sure how insurers work in your country, but if you disable a safety feature on the vehicle, they may refuse a claim in case of an accident. --

Guys, we don't have snow on the roads here, so I can't comment on that.

However, I have driven thousands of kms on gravel all over ZA and Namibia, and not once have I found that ABS is an issue.

The key is to deflate your tyres and to keep to a reasonable speed, around here that would be 80kmh in the dry and 60kmh in the wet.

I did a masters in engineering, one of our final topics in control theory was ABS in snow, where we modelled a Bosch system.

The problem is very specific to snow only... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I think the Land Rover Experience vehicles were fitted with a switch to enable the ABS / TC to be disabled. What colour is your 110 (most Experience vehicles are silver, or white more recently)? Primarily for the purpose of being able to demonstrate the difference in the way the vehicle behaves with / without ABS / TC. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I assume that there's so little friction that all 4 wheels will lock at practically the same time, thus the system assumes the car is still moving with wheels locked, and tries to regain traction by releasing wheels?

More to ABS...
On an advanced driving course in 1990 - the instructors would disable the ABS so that drivers could learn cadence braking.

Recently visited an old hand regarding Land Rovers - he abhors using ABS on a gravel road - on his Defender the fuse is permanently removed ...

Before DSC became available - it was common practice to remove the ABS fuse to facilitate dune- and deep sand driving - although I did not drive a Defender at that time and cannot comment on it.

I was involved in an A6 Quattro accident on a gravel road when I had to swerve and brake to avoid an animal crossing the road - I believe the vehicle would have stopped better without ABS.

Had a recent emergency stop in the Defender - also for a wild animal - no swerving involved and I was pretty impressed the way the vehicle behaved.

To the OP: there may then be a variety of reasons why such a switch may have been installed.
