Which Boost Starter Pack?
Hi Guys,

Given my new place has got no plug sockets in the car parking area for me to plug in a battery charger I have thought of getting a booster pack instead.

What would people recommend?

I don''t need a professional spec one, just one which I can keep indoors and charged in case of events like this morning?

What sort of amps do I need to be looking at to cover Tdi-Td5? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I can't help with the booster pack but how about a solar trickle charger? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I like the idea but its parked undercover so no sunlight Big Cry

Plus it needs too be something which can kick start the engine in the morning as an emergency rather than a maintain charge during the day Sad

One of those things I hope never to need too use but would have been useful a number of times in the last few days. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

depends on your exact requirements but perhaps it's time for a dual battery set up and some LED lighting.

you could potentially run some led lighting for many hours and pop a small inverter on their too to recharge various items from power tools to laptops Thumbs Up

There are three options for something portable

Option 1 is the heaviest and cheapest, and that's just a normal battery, potentially on a trolley, with some jump leads. That's what we have on the farm.

Option 2 is a booster pack with an AGM battery, they're a bit pricier usually and don't have anything like the capacity of the normal battery but because of how they're constructed they can put out a higher peak current. Usually packaged nicely.

Option 3 is a booster pack with a Li-Ion battery. These are the smallest, lightest and newest sort, and have an even lower capacity, though high peak current output like the AGM ones.

If all you're ever going to want it for is a quick boost in the mornings once in a while, then Option 2 is probably the best.

Of course if a non starting problem is actually due to your battery getting a bit tired, then the best thing you can do is get a new battery. Save the old one, pop it on a trolley and keep it topped up Smile

I can't recommend the Clarke 400 starter pack highly enough, its proven to be invaluable and never let us down.

Caterham I love your enthusiasm Thumbs Up

But it wont matter how many battery you have, they wont help when its 6am and flat!

I only want it because I needed to start mine to get to Halfords to get a new battery and diagnose if it was the battery or something more serious. A boost starter to get me and friends going rather than a permanent thing. I have a bit of a thing for tools, the more the merrier.

A friend came over today and tried to jump it off his Festa but it wasn't having it so he gave me a lift into town and back again with a new battery. 10 mins and were sorted again. Turns out the old battery had a dead cell so had enough to maintain charge for running but not enough to starting.

Thanks for the input Cupboard and dlks151 will bear that in mind when looking for one.

I have one of these along with a couple of the Li-ion battery packs. I bought the sealy one for the motorhome as it lives in storage but have used it a couple of times on colleagues cars at work.

I have used the smaller Li-ion pack on Elaine's Zed and it started the car with no issues, (3.5L V6).

I use a Sealey RS1 starter pack. My Defender spends weeks without being driven, often the only time I start the engine is to move it a few feet further down the drive to get my motorbike past each morning, then reversing it the few feet back again. Obviously this isn't good for the battery and together with the tracker drawing power from the battery I find during the winter that after a couple of weeks or so it won't start.

I do keep on top of this by connecting my Ctek charger, but for those odd times when I haven't, then the Sealey RS1 enables the engine to start easily. I often carry it around in the Defender if I do take it out, just in case.

Im thinking of getting the Mobile Centre extended battery terminals fitted on the passenger seat box to save me having to remove the seat base to access the battery. Though Im not sure if I might be able to connect it to the 12v socket instead of having to connect croc clip to the battery?

Remember seeing one on the Disco3 forum that was tiny (size of your hand), they were all saying it worked.

If it works on a D3 then a Def will be no bother, my Def with Op Red top wouldn't jump our D3 ...

IIRC the boster pack on the D3 forum was a NUCU unit. I have one for my Def. Great feature, is it has a USB socket to charge your phone, ipad etc. 110 D250 SE HT

I have the Clarke Jump Start 4000 and used it successfully on the TD5 I had. It would just about crank a TDV8. 2016 D4 HSE
