Dash cams Transgend vs Blackvue
Well today, after encountering nutters overtaking on blind bends, not one but two and causing me to swerve out the way I think ASAP I need to get a dash cam.
Been on about it for ages but due to cost put it off...

So tired of idiots out there on summer evenings driving around like maniacs, this summer I've had multiple incidents all close calls caused by others. Rolling Eyes

Having read through here by searching posts there doesn't seem to be much definitive info and a lot of chit chat in between.
However, from what I have seen Transgend and Blackvue seem most popular.
What do you have and would you recommend it?

I know there is a considerable price difference between the two, one of the resons why I was put off buying the Blackvue as it seems great but price is hefty.
However, there does seem to be front and rear options.

Do many of you have front and rear or just front cams?

Does the Transgend have any options for rear view or not?
Thoughts welcome. Thumbs Up

I've got a Blackvue DRG500 in my 90 and I'm thinking about getting another one for the Freelander., mainly because I can't be bothered swapping it around from car to car. The Blackvue is a great bit of kit and works very well, but as Steve says, they are a bit spendy and I'd like to think I could get something decent but a bit easier on the wallet.

The Transcend looks to have a decent spec but I'm not so keen on the rear screen, it makes the whole thing a lot more bulky, that's one of the things I like about the Blackvue, it's small enough to tuck in behind the mirror and remain pretty discrete.

Needless to say I'm still looking at other options. Confused

G1W from Amazon, £50 including a memory card. Great quality footage, nice and simple, does what it says on the tin.

No rear camera, but you can always fit a second one.

Higher end with front and rear options, Koonlung K1S. £150, 2 lenses with a separate DVR unit, GPD receiver.

Blackvue lovely but the price is huge.

Blackvue DR650 truck. Does what I want perfectly, including the external rear camera (needed for a DC).

Suppose the £300+ price tag is nothing compared to a potential claim!

I can't understand what it is this last couple of months, they seem to be driving like maniacs out there.

Lately I'm regularly seein cars in hedges, people doing about 85 in a 60 and 45 in a 30 zones.
Dangerous overtaking, HGV's and large vehicles going too quick around bends merging into the oncoming lane because they aren't taking it steady enough.

On the whole with cars I think it's drink driving...
Always much much worse summer evenings between about 6 and 10pm.

Anyway, who are the best suppliers of the Blackvue's? I seem to remember the site at one sptime wasn't very user friendly, maybe it's been updated now.

Once I've got my service done this summer I'll be looking at this next priority I think.

Does anyone have any footage of their's?

I am having Blackvue on 3 cars. Oldest one is DR400, which has been running flawlessly for 5 years. Newest one is DR750 on my 90. I've tried quite a number of other in between trying to find a better/cheaper options. Eventually, I ended back with Blackvue. Video quality is top notch, and those have been most reliable.

What's the live view like on any dashcams? I know Blackvue claim to have it, is it usable as a reversing camera?

My Blackview doesn't have a built-in screen (you Bluetooth to it from a device if you want a screen) which generally means that it is no use as a reversing camera due to the set-up time.

That being said, the picture is quite adequate for the purpose.

One thing to bear in mind if you are thinking of using a rear-facing dashcam camera as a reversing camera is that genuine reversing cameras flip the image so the display you see is the same as it would be if you were looking in a rear view mirror. This is becuase the human factors guys figured out that that is what drivers are used to when sitting in a car. A normal rear-facing dashcam will give you an unflipped image, so the view is what you'd see if you were sitting facing backwards. A lot of folk can't cope with this unflipped view when using it as the basis for manouvering.

The top-end systems will give you an option to flip or not to flip.

Not a problem, but something to bear in mind.

Just to chuck another one in the mix - What about the Roadhawk DC-2, I've seen a few comments and reviews on these and they appear pretty good for a relatively discreet camera.

Anyone here had any experience of them?

I have the cheapest Blackvue (front only) and its perfect
Software is rubbish but I do it through Microsoft

Police prosecuted a road rage because of it, cant fault the picture quality

I am happily getting another for the Freelander 2, cost £150 fitted at our local audio dealer

Transender for me... :)
No regrets about my Transend whatsoever Steve... Thumbs Up

Great little unit, discrete enough to pretty much hide behind the rear view mirror, with a good enough screen to assist with squaring against my OCD, although it connects via its own WiFi to my iPhone to do the job as well as view/download the video files... Whistle

I also have a very inexpensive, but very effective, Mobius unit as a rear facing camera in the offside quarter, which is a surprisingly awesome and flexible bit of kit... Very Happy

Whichever way you want to go, why not check out the relevant reviews on Techmoan, which are pretty damn good reviews and he keeps them pretty much up to date too... Mr. Green

The Mobius review is > HERE

Bit late but a point of note. My Blackvue 650 causes radio interference on my car ( non lr) I believe this is quite common and is related to the rear camera cable run.
