Roll Cages
After a scare I had driving on Exmoor with LRE West Country a couple of years ago, I decided no more until I had fitted a roll cage. In addition to protecting my own life, I wish to protect my vehicle, as no longer made.

So I guess that means an external roll cage so front wings can have protection too if I choose.

I would like to sit in a Defender first with a cage fitted as the frame round the front windscreen worries me in respect of obstructed field of vision. Finding a vehicle with cage fitted is the problem. Where could I go to find one? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I had a full external cage on my last 110 and I will be having another external cage put on my current 110 DCPU.

They do not impinge on my vision at all neither does the snorkel Smile 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

My wife said if you get another Landy I want a roll cage fitted....so

Hi,

I had a safety devices cage fitted a couple of weeks ago and, as hard as it is to believe with the skinny A-pillar, you really can't see its been fitted on the drivers side, and doesn't cause any real issue for visibility on the passengers side. I only see about 20% of the tube diameter out of the corner of my eye - no problem at junctions etc.

The snorkel I've just fitted intrudes slightly in to the drivers vision, but only slightly. Still no issue as long as its closely fitted and slightly outside the cage.

I was also amazed I didn't even get any (edited Laughing ) "additional" wind noise at 70mph.

Hope that helps.

It's a kind of satin finish, but its only plasti dip to protect the real paint.

Thread here Smile

That is a *VERY* nice 130, Joe!

May I ask who fitted the cage, was it SD themselves?

Cheers Blackwolf.

Yes it was Safety Devices themselves at their base in Suffolk. I decided I'd rather have it fitted by the guys that do it day in day out rather than someone at a smaller outlet scratching their head over instructions.

They had it for a week, and £1440 later I collected it with the cage. Its got the tags on the back for the "over canopy" part of their 130 cage so I can fabricate my own rear half at some point to be how I want it. They also fitted it without the internal hoop to give me (6ft 5 and quite broad) some shoulder room. Planning on making my rear half immensely strong so wasn't too worried about a slight compromise in strength for now.

Very good service from Lili, very helpful at all stages.

The obligatory "outside safety devices" photo Laughing missing the external part of the snorkel.

Back to the OP, I don't think front wing protection is legal in the UK. I'm sure its been discussed here before somewhere as "brush bars" if I remember correctly. A cage will protect the "cab" and roof pretty well though against trees etc.

The RBL213 I think is the one I want. Do external roll cages increase insurance premiums? More for damage to other vehicles in a collision! Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Adrian Flux have just added all my modifications on without a fuss or increase in price. I suspect it might be different elsewhere though - I've been phoning round trying to get the price down recently but the NFU weren't interested because of the list of modifications. Same goes for a few others.

speak to whitbread 4x4 off road

value for money good.

strength good

style can be tailored to your taste

wing bars for off road competitions good idea. less so for road.

along wire bush wires pointless for tarmac driving

cages are classed as modifications so yes they can increase your premiums

wind noise and fuel economy are affected....regardless what some folk say

What roof has you got as no one seems to make them to fit over ribbed roofs which is a shame.

Also ref insurance it's like anything else luck of the draw. Had a SD cage fitted to my VW Baja Insurance no change. Same insurance company refused to cover me when I asked about fitting one to my Mk2 Golf which was going to be road legal track day car
