I just bought the L242, yet to arrive though.
I emailed SD, they say it certainly can be used as a rack. It's spec was actually higher than the maximum Defender gutter mount rating (which I think is very conservative and ignored by all) . I'll find the email once I get off the phone. Makes me wonder why SD offer racks for sale also! It appears that people can't be trusted to tie good knots. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

I believe the JLR rating for roof rack loading is more to do with keeping the spec tilt angle than any static or even dynamic loading limit per se.

I believe mine is a protection and performance one which looks like it was second hand when fitted to my 110 before I got it ( it's also got an internal middle hoop as well)
When I get round to it I intend to upgrade the bolts etc to high grade stainless steel button heads, as they are a bit mix and match at the moment. Haven't used it as a rack or fitted a rack to it yet however I like some of the rhino ones plus they seem a reasonable price, either that or I might weld one up myself. ^ I like how close to the roof this fits.
At first I thought external front bit then move in, but my car is black to the external will blend in I think... |

I have an SD roll age on my 110, just like mikealpha above. Have used it as a rack a number of times, ladders and such, even this years Christmas tree...
I do have a brand new SD 90 rack for the cage sitting at home if anyone wants to make me an offer. Includes the fixing kit and would even consider parting with the SD rear ladder too. Just saying... Love the cage, feels a whole heap safer cruising down the road and really stiffens up the chassis as well. |

If its a proper cage as in tied into the chassis and not just a show cage mounted to the ally body then it can definatley be used as a rack or loads of rack companies make Land rover racks with cage fixings

I found that email from SD:
Turns out it wasn't as specific as I recall, but neither was my original post. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Joking aside I could probably sort a deal...
However when looking for just a roof rack these can be £600 to £1000 easily. So its all relative. For me its just piece of mind so will get my jar and start saving |

One thing to remember is that NO ONE currently makes external roll cages for Landys with ribbed roofs
