Td5 conversion to puma Dash
I've bought and stripped an 06 defender 90 td5 and basically want to install it with the puma dash,
I know I might have to change the gearbox but is there anybody out there that does this conversion
or does anybody want to swap a td5 engine for a 6 speed gearbox , the td5 has done 75000 miles.
Thanks

I have, You don't have to change the gear box, just bent the gear stick, that's what I did, works fine. It really depends on what your doing. If your installing a Puma bulkhead with the dash attactched, then a change of gearbox might be in order so the gear sticks clear the heater that the puma uses. But if your using the td5 bulkhead, you will have to work out how you want the heater to work and plum accordingly, and only bend the gear stick. It's not dead simple but it's certainly not as hard as people have made it out to be.

Cheers lads, basically I want the puma dash, but I don't really want to change the gearbox as it sounds
to complicated, I don't suppose you have any before and after photos Buck, would be willing to pay someone
who could do it as well. Thanks

Think the puma dash is far nicer and modern than the Td5

Surely the latest dashboard is at least in keeping with newer cars and a little more ergonomic?

What don't you like about it. (I guess you own an Older model?)

I like the really early Series 1 dashboard very very basic but for my daily driver I like it looking semi normal car like,.. Very Happy

It's an 06 plate, isn't the puma dash the last one to be built also I think it's more compact and modern, I really want the puma but if the gearbox had too be changed then I would have trouble doing that, would be willing to swap my gearbox for one that would be more suitable for myself.

It's really not worth changing the gearbox just for the dash, just bend the gear stick, far cheaper. One thing I will say is though, by the looks of your cars icon, you have a 90 HT, has it still got its rear bulkhead and how tall are you? If your like me and over 6ft, you'll find it a shock to how much more the dash is closer to you than the td5s. If you haven't already I would sit in one and you'll see what I mean. It wasn't so much of a problem with mine as its a 110 csw, so plenty of room for the seats to go back. Photos could be a little difficult without taking the dash out again as its hidden under the heater popes and dash itself, but I'll trying get some for you tomorrow.
Just remember, getting the dash in is the easy bit, making it functional is a bigger task, past the gear stick issues, there's things such as the whole heater system to think about, ie: valves and cables, switches shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as the looms are long enough and then there's the dials, you'll probably have to make up a new panel for them to fit in the binnacle. As I said before, difficult, but not impossible.

Another thing worth considering is that does you 90 have air con? Because that opens up a new can of worms that I didn't have to think about, as mine doesn't have it.

No there's no air con, the height shouldn't be a problem as I'm only 5'6 , I had a 2011 puma before but it got stolen but It seemed spacious enough for me, so do you think I can put a puma dash on a td5 bulkhead or will I need to change that as well. Cheers

I did it on a 300 bulkhead so td5 shouldn't be too hard, not sure if there's a massive difference tbh. Probably took me just over a weekend to sort it, but I was waiting on parts to arrive. I reckon would only take a couple of days to get it in if you had all the bits you needed.
Another thing I forgot to say is that the bulkhead vents will want sealing shut as you won't be able to use them anymore. I bolted mine shut with some simple brackets to hold them tightly sealed, wasn't sure how I was going to get on with the new dash so I didn't want to seal them with silicon, incase I wanted to put the old dash back in. As it turns out, I love it, so when the dash has to come out at some point I'll probably seal them with silicon then.

Cheers for the advice Buck, so basically I'm gonna go ahead and put the puma dash on the original td5 bulkhead then basically bend the gearshift so it doesn't clash with the dash, will give it a go will post some pictures along the way, only just getting the chassis galvenised so will be a few weeks yet, anymore advice from anyone would be very much appreciated 👍🏻

I fitted the original dials on a panel I made to fit in the original binnacle. As for the original Pima dials, I have no idea, I do remember seeing on here somewhere that an American firm managed to fit one but can't remember how or if they even said how.
