Double DIN Dash Issues? If you have one fitted, please help!
Hi All,

I had a double DIN dash fitted, but it wasn't done perfectly and the top of the entire central double DIN dash sits up, creating a gap.
I've raised this with the place that fitted it and they assured me it's always that way! I've seen two other Defenders which the same company did which looked perfectly fine.

If anyone's had this issue, how did you solve it?

More so, if you have one fitted either by yourself or a company, I would really appreciate a photograph, taken slightly from one side to show how things line up. I want to prove to the place that they are at fault and for them to correct their mistake. Your help will be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Edzi

It is very difficult to avoid having some level of gap as the two sections have been cut.

With careful fitting if should not really be noticeable.

Several thing can make it worse:

1. Poor cutting to separate vents (very little one can do if this is the case other than get a new one).

2. Sometimes one of the heater pipes obstructs the head unit going back as far as it otherwise would ( a little heat applied will bend it out of the way).

3. The base of the clock housing pushes up the vent section as head unit is in the way (this was my problem, just cut a wedge in the bottom edge of the housing, but still not perfect).

4. The head unit bracket on the bulkhead is no longer needed but can get in the way of the new head unit going as far back as it otherwise would.

It is very easy to remove the front panel to check all the above.

BUT... you paid a lot of money to have this fitted, the installers should do it to your satisfaction.

Removed the internal steel air duct bracket and cut the lower clock edge, no problem at all

(sorry for the fingerprints Mr. Green )

Thanks a lot for the feedback and tips. Very much appreciated. Here's a picture of how mine looks. The bottom fits perfectly and the top curves outwards. Also, they didn't leave a lip on the top of the previous dash with the top vents, so it was flopping around. I had to ask them to fit something in between to make it more secure.

Shocked that's awfull, I hope you didn't pay them. From other posts I'd say that's the heater pipe holding the whole facia forward. Ray

Well that is probably the worst install I have seen and if that is what they consider the norm...

Would agree, either the heater pipe or the rear bracket are stopping the head unit going back.

Also looks like the clock is fouling so would cut the base off that while you are at it.

Get rid of that piece of trim/ filler as well, no need for it once done.

Do it yourself as then you can be sure it is right, or, come down to Cornwall and I will do it for you Thumbs Up

If you really want to go back to the fitters, show them the above pics plus an image search will show many more done properly.

Good luck

It should fit absolutely flush.

I had this problem when I first had mine fitted. Issue was they hadn't bent the pipes back enough and also there are two clips in between the top switch and the window switch. Pull out the window switch and pull the clip from behind at same time as pushing the facsia in. It will clip in nicely and you will move the fascia flush. If it still doesn't go, then there must be w blockage behind. Check the pipes are out of the way and ensure they have carefully trimmed the clock off.

Pass this to your fitters and get them to fix. But it's absolutely not right and don't let them fob you off!!

Here is what it looks like:

Its just the ducting behind, just gently push it back into a flat and it will fit grand.

yep i used a hairdryer to get it hot with a wooden wedge against it to hold it down while it cooled, it then kept its position while the head unit went right back where it should.
as i dont need the dvd drive that seems to make these head units deep next time i would buy a shorter one without the dvd
