Are the locating tabs fully home? There are two each side of the leccy windows if I remember rightly.
I think everyone else has made the right suggestions and there are obstructions etc to the rear if below.
It's a very tight fit for a single din never mind a two din. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

That's a good point about the tabs.
For fitting, I find it useful to leave the electric window switches hanging out so you can get a finger through to support the plastic brackets those tabs click in to. Otherwise the brackets bend back and spring forward again, pushing the facia back out. http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

I have had my dash apart so many times I lost the metal clips. I basically have now drilled a hole in the headunit case, and then with the clock and vents out, I attached a cable tie to the mounting hole that the support bracket (which you remove) bolts too. Pull this tight and the fascia etc all sits perfectly in line with the sides. Andy

It should fit absolutely flush.

I had this problem when I first had mine fitted. Issue was they hadn't bent the pipes back enough and also there are two clips in between the top switch and the window switch. Pull out the window switch and pull the clip from behind at same time as pushing the facsia in. It will clip in nicely and you will move the fascia flush. If it still doesn't go, then there must be w blockage behind. Check the pipes are out of the way and ensure they have carefully trimmed the clock off.

Pass this to your fitters and get them to fix. But it's absolutely not right and don't let them fob you off!!

Here is what it looks like:
