Hmm, gazman mentioned the FPR too. Well, I'll replace the gasket and exhaust manifold since I've ordered those already, and see what she runs like - sounds like the FPR's the next obvious bet!

[Now to look up how I test fuel pressure without just buying a new pump and regulator or insanely expensive testing kit!]

best way to check the fuel pressure is to remove the temperature sender on the fpr and screw a guage into the fpr where you take it from. this gives you the pump pressure.
You can check the return pressure by removing the line to the fuel cooler. It's a quick release jobby and if you have a spare/ old one you can Censored something up.

Unfortunately I moved house yesterday and I've not idea where my bits are to get you pictures or tell you thread/fitting sizes. Google is your best friend for this atm 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Wondering whether I don't need to check the exhaust manifold gasket or similar - would that cause this?

I have just replaced the injector harness and it has cured my lack of low down power. I have a steep drive and my defender can usually crawl its way up quite easily on tick over. Over the last few months it had been unable to do this without stalling and there was what felt like massive turbo lag. There was no spluttering at all.

The harness was two and a half years old (I have no life, I keep a spreadsheet Rolling Eyes ). I had sealed up the connectors with silicone and did not have any oil at the ecu. I was amazed at the difference when I took it out for a test drive.

Also, maybe your turbo to intercooler hoses are in poor condition? 2002 110 td5

Good tip about the harness - I'll leave that til I've tried a couple other things, but worth having in the back of my mind in case it's that and just hasn't travelled all the way down to the ECU yet!

Intercooler hoses are high up my list of to-do's, definitely Smile

If that was your problem I might change mine just to see if there's a difference even though my maf was definately finished. Ray

It surprised me actuall, because like the OP, I thought symptoms were misfires caused by oil in the ecu. As you know mine had no oil there so can only assume the oil had got past the silicone I had put in and caused some sort of electrical error within the harness...weird.

I got the Land Rover centre to put mine on their diagnostics where they could read live data. The MAF was working fine as we suspected. It was really interesting. Mark showed me everything it could read and explained how they use the information to diagnose problems (obviously), but it is interesting to see it with your own eyes on your vehicle. 2002 110 td5

Must admit I'm tempted (although it's big bucks) to get a Nanocom. Will have to look up whether there's anything it doesn't cover (given that sod's law dictates that would be what's wrong with it!)

Anyway, I found some silicone hoses for a good price so I've ordered those - they'll need doing at some point even if they're not causing trouble yet.

There were rumblings of a nanocom group buy, I'm tempted by one still.

Check the turbo for excessive wear ( too much play in the turbine bearings ) and also look for any oil etc in the induction system, if the intercooler is full of gunk this will effect it. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

We put jimb1978's 110 on my nanocom and it didn't bring up his fault which I believe turned out to be the injector loom. Ray

Just for the record, i have just replaced my actuator on my 2001 td5 with 64000 miles on it, and it seems to have made a nice difference, can feel the boost coming in better...

I had to loosen it up quite a bit to get it moving smoothly again, loads of WD40 and moving it about using a 15mm (if I recall corrrectly) spanner which fits perfectly over the top. Which is easy once you can get to it, the heatshield was in such a mess that had to be binned (again, thanks, previous owners!)

Glad you mentioned this now, hoses arrive tomorrow so I'll have a look through it all for gunk while I'm at it! Thumbs Up Will have to have a hunt on Youtube for how much play is excessive! Wink
