I don't know any other vehicle machined in contemporary times that is so sensitive to driver behavior in fuel consumption as the Defender is. This is one reason discussions on "what is your range" or "how much fuel do you use" are almost worthless, because drivers are too different (which is an important bright human light at the very end of the current inhuman society tube).

There are people that ride the 2.4 PUMA Defender on 15 mpg and unable to do better then 20 mpg, others go on 40 mpg and never below 30 mpg. With a factor of two on driver dependability, what does this make of general statements other then blowing them apart?

Again, the 2.2 appears to be quite different and seems to follow the more modern trend to "forced blessings by fences", suppressing human factor and throwing away the potential benefit of miss daisy drivers. A universal fuel consumption number for a car demands for an uttermost standardized driver, but do we really want to pass driving to big brother remote steering or become driverbots? Sorry, it is a philosophical morning.

OK, back. 500 is possible in a 2.4, but not reachable for everybody. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

Did a back-to-back test two weeks ago. (I say 'test' loosely). I drove the same route with the 2.4 and then the 2.2. Both were filled just before boarding the ferry to Calais and then undertook a non-stop trip from Calais to the Alps. Same route, same time of day, same weight (albeit the 2.4 was a DC the 2.2 a SW). Both were averaging 110kmh (speedo indicated, not GPS) and the DC has 18" wheels, the SW 16" wheels. Neither has a roof rack or other items that might create drag. Both offered almost identical in mileage, as mentioned already the light coming on at approx 450 miles, indeed so similar that I refuelled at the same motorway service station. The second half of the route was very different however, the tank 3/4 emptied getting to the Alps, (whereas had it been flat as above, it should have only used a 1/3), but not a surprise given the number of uphill sections and crossing through the Nantua pass etc.

I have done this route numerous times, mainly in the 2.2, but on the flat section, Calais to Dijon, I regularly get 450miles until the light and now always use this as my motorway benchmark. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Sad, I know, but I keep a record of my fuel and mileages etc, and for my 110 the best, average, and worst MPGs I have recorded in the last 5 years have been:

Best - 33.64 mpg
Average - 25.99 mpg
Worst - 19.03 mpg


On this basis, given that a 110 has a 16 gallon tank, the range would be:

Best - 538 miles
Average - 416 miles.
Worst - 304 miles

My 110 is a 2.4 DC with a roofrack running on BFG Muds, with RAI, BAS remap, no EGR, and (for some of this period) a decat. It is normally loaded to about 3 tonnes gross, and in the 5 years over which these figures are derived it has covered approx 150,000 miles. The remap and EGR deletion probably accounts for about 2 miles per gallon improvement overall. There is a massive difference in consumption between cruising at 55 and cruising at 75 - the latter probably uses about 15% more fuel (which is not surprising since drag is proportional to the second power or square of speed).

To match Caterham's legendary level of economy I would have to achieve over 38mpg, and I doubtthis would be possible in my vehicle without either modification or halucinogenic pharmaceuticals! If I were to strip off the rack and RAI, change the tyres, unload the vehicle, and drive like a Sunday driver it might be possible!

on my 07 2.4 110 I generally get 400 miles from the tank - but have full length brownchurch rack & full camping set up inside ...
I also agree with Blackwolf with the max as when we were in Norway with a 50mph speed limit we were getting in the 480 range on every tank ... but in the UK I do a lot of motorway miles at 65-70 so that eats the average up a bit.. Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Interesting - checked my stat's (only calculate the odd tank):

Worst 26.54 MPG (probably towing) November 2011
Best 31.97 MPG (summer 2013)

Average: 28.57 MPG

Not measured for a while - I think she's improved with age... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

ooh also kind of interesting...

Worst: 25.1 MPG (definitely towing)
Best: 31.5 MPG (50-60 MPH all day mainly in 5-6th gear)

Average: 27.3 MPG

Measured: over 21,540 Miles

Speed:
I worked out... (or just realised) that my Defender just felt happy at gear changes
coinciding with 10 MPH increments...

1st > 10 MPH
2nd @ 20 MPH
3rd @ 30 MPH
4th @ 40 MPH
5th @ 50 MPH
6th @ 60 MPH

Long distance, 'touring' at 60 MPH (in 6th) is the key to OKish MPG,
I found that reducing to 50 MPH only gave a slight improvement but
the car was not as happy in 6th gear.

Towing:
This suits me as 60 MPH is the limit for towing on UK motorways and dual carriageways
(50 MPH other types of roads...providing no there is no lower speed limit is in place).

Range:
Typically around 300 + Miles in a 2.4 90 (56 Lt Tank... not pushing on too far after the warning light)

As we pass through the French Alps on-route to the Italian Lakes (next year),
we'll do our best to keep out your way...

Back almost to topic... the plan always for this Defender was to shut the office for a month
(or two) and go long range across Europe, we plan to do the NC500 first as a 'warm up'
hopefully in the Autumn https://www.northcoast500.com/home.aspx

Have also been researching long range / additional fuel tanks, to allow us to go further,
or push on more to where others don't...
