Help wanted identifying pre WW1 car
Got the Mother in Law down this weekend with some of her old family stuff. She reckons photo taken about 1910.

If anyone knows what make and model this car is it would be much appreciated. Many Thanks.

Looks like a Humber ( a friend used to have one!) but with so many Veteran Car manufactures many components were shared! Working towards Carry on camping!

Looking at the style of the driving lamps with the distinctive lift off handles and the distinguishing tourniquet cover hinges and the square raised seat box section and the type of windscreen frame this vehicle is without question a 1908 Daimler TC48 Roi des Belges.

There was also a cross over by Daimler who 'slightly modernised the car at the end of that decade and produced this version again called the Daimler Rois des Belges Tourer and I think your example is of the 1909/10 crossover version where the old model was revamped to give more streamlined looks... However it appears your photo still retains the old one piece windscreen...Both however retained the oblong model badge below the windscreen, as also seen in your example.

The whole radiator, bonnet, rear tub and rear arches look a lot different to the Daimler Ray

I think that is because at the beginning of the twentieth century all cars were hand made by many differing craftsmen and there really was no standardisation on design, many cars manufactured from 1901 until after the Great War could be classed as one offs.
Grand touring cars were especially prone coming out of the factory to differing designs, often using parts from other line models.
There are far many more similarities within the two tourers than a few dissimilarities and bear in mind both have been restored by modern day enthusiasts who may not have followed the original to the letter.

I also thought at first that the car might have been a model 1910 -Cadillac modelo – tourer which had similar lines to the Daimler and had identical rivets in line on the bonnet, but this car was never made without the split fold down windscreen where the early Daimler had a single screen, only changing to a split screen latter because of the Cadillacs fold down split screen popularity. Plus as far as I know this Cadillac model was never exported into Britain.

I'm going to have to disagree with Gilarion, I think Andy80 is correct.

Looking at the photo, and comparing it to other pictures of a 1908 Daimler TC48 Roi des Belges, it cannot be one. For a start, the wheelbase is much shorter.

I also may be incorrect, however I think it is a Humber 10/12 Tourer, which were produced between 1905 and 1907 (according to the interweb!), which would confirm if the photo was taken around 1910. The radiator and bonnet shape is very much Humber, and if you look closely, the radiator cap embellishment is an 'H' within circle.

I couldn't find a photo of the front end of one, so here's another 10/12 but a Coupé model to show the shape of the radiator and bonnet.

As Gilarion correctly said however, all these cars were hand crafted, so the car could have different features fitted such as the spare mounted on the right hand running board, the weather gear, and the headlights that could well be the same as the Daimler Tourer... Pete

You may be right as it is very hard to place it down to one model as very few plans and surviving models exist. However I have just spent the best part of an hour looking through all my classic car books and there is also a possibility that the car could be a 1910 British-built Talbot tourer sadly no models of this car survived. I agree there are similarities with the Humber as there are similarities with the Talbot but as I said it is possible that any car constructed so early in the twentieth century could have used parts from one make to another. This car does have an identical windscreen and frame the mud wings are also very similar. And the side lights are identical, as is the spare wheel so now my money is on the Talbot

The bodywork on the Talbot does look very very similar!

The thing that makes me convinced it's a Humber, is both the rad and bonnet shape, and the 'H' rad cap embellishment.

Another tell tale is if you look at the original picture, and the first one I posted, the line of the front door curves upwards at the bottom, whereas the front door on your Talbot is a flat line.

As you know, in those days, the cars were coachbuilt. But the radiator and bonnets tended to be the same for the one particular manufacturer as a sort of 'trademark' symbol. It may well be that the coachwork for both the Talbot, and the Humber, was carried out by the same Coachbuilder. Pete
