Before I bought my last Puma [2.2 110 XS USW] a couple of years or so ago I had a look around and test of the various 4wd crewcab pickups on offer in the UK and came very close to buying a 3.2 Ranger. I'm in the same position now and am again taken with the new Ranger and have been offered a deal on a new 2.2 auto.
On this occasion I don't have time to scope out the whole market so before deciding whether to sign on the dotted line on not I'd welcome opinions on what makes / models currently available in the UK are decent choice. The ability to tow 3.5 ton or thereabouts would be nice as would a decent warranty / reliability record and auto option too. Any views / real life experiences? Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

My next door neighbour has had one since March, he only rates it as an OK motor. He's not been too impressed with its towing, yes it will tow the weight but he finds it a bit undergeared with his tipper trailer.
If I was in the position I'd be looking to see what VW have to offer shortly. |

There is a raft of new pickups due out although some of them ( Fiat ) are a re-hashed Mitsubishi.
The Nissan Navara is getting good reviews in Oz where it has been out a while now and if the Ranger is an option I would go with the Wildtrak for a towing vehicle. There is a new Toyota out in September with a 5 year warranty and as has been suggested the VW Amarok but it does require a bit of spec adding to match the others. I've been considering an Isuzu D-max hunter edition , might be worth a look

Thing to watch out for with all the pickups on the market is that they're bigger than the 110 (and often bigger than the 130), have huge rear overhangs and a lower GTW than the Defender. That might not be an issue for you, but if you're regularly towing big trailers and want to put stuff in the back then it's something to be aware of. Most come with rather shorter tyres than the Defender, which again might not be an issue for you if you don't really use the off road ability heavily.
I seriously considered an Isuzu for a while too. |

If you're looking to do hard off road work and tow 3.5 from experience I'd go new ranger if it wasn't for the enormous size of it I'd have one on my drive tomorrow.

Just done 4 years, 60k of faultless miles (that's torn it) in my Navara Outlaw (3l V6 rather than 2.5l 4pot). Highly recommend, tows like a dream but only 3200kg towing.
By end of year virtually all the Uk double cabs will be 3.5tonnes (can't imagine what prompted that ) but if you plan full trailer and truck, look for train weight or you may get caught out. New Hilux looks very good on paper He who dies with the most toys...wins! |

These are all good and well but do any of them have a full length roof rack available? We want bikes, 2 tents and surfing gear on the roof. The 3.5m rack on a 130 is just brill ! 1951 80" S1 2.0

I 've had a Hilux, 60k miles no issues, good torque, good towing.
I traded it in 2011 for the new Amarok, interior more car like, nice. 2.0l engine coped well, seemed little different from the 4 pot 3l of the Hilux. The Amarok in my opinion had a better 4wd system (4 motion) If I were to be in the market for a pick up I would probably get an Amarok. But, as always, one mans meat....... Sammitr hard tops do a good roof rack system taking into account that the pickup tub moves separately to cab section. http://smmcanopies.co.uk/ |
