If the header tank hose is cold check the Y piece in it. I have seen several that have become totally clogged up and let nothing through. With mine I took it and the three attached hoses off and soaked them in warm water for a while then a hose and a bit of wire soon cleaned them out, has behaved perfectly ever since. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

Thanks Dave, I will check that. I drove it today and the needle sat at around 100c. I checked heater tank and it was stone cold. So the water is definitely not doing the whole system. I will look into some more.

Evening. I've taken the three pipes off and the pipes that go from the header tank to the top of the rad are clear but the pipe the comes from the thermostat housing seems blocked. I take the round y section should blow through from each side.

Scrap what I just wrote above I found out that it should be clear. Really struggled to clear it all out but now it's done. Very Happy I will take it for a drive in the morning. Dave I think there is a beer coming your way. Thumbs Up

I replaced the head gasket on mine recently for getting to 100*C. Even 95 was too much for what I was used to. As previously said, my understanding is 88-92 is what to expect from a 300. Maybe even 92 was hot, as I spent about 15 minutes washing my radiator alone to get the mud out of it.

G-Mack, I have a question re your cylinder head temperature - where is that measuring? Is it that electrical plug on top of the engine? 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

I've not had the chance to give it a good run but all seems OK this far. It's only gone up to about 92c and it seems to take a bit more time to warm up now it's heating all the coolant. Will see how I get on this week and let you know.

Muddy Chris

I got an engine watchdog TM4 digital temperature guage for added piece of mind. There is also one called Madman that sitis in the dash to replace the original. My favourite line from before was that the original temperture guage measures in bananas. The Engine Watchdog also has a hi temperture alarm.

Cheers

Hhmmmmm. It's still getting warm on now and again, 100c. I'm going to stick a new rad and gauge with sender in. Hopefully that will sort it.

Well my saga continues. I changed the my rad for a good second hand (only used for a couple of months) and p gasket again yesterday. Tootling around today the needle sits bank on 90c. Then did a run of 5 miles at 65 and the needle went up to about 100c. All my pipes are clear, my water pump is new and my thermostat is new. Has any one for any ideas what else to look for.

Thanks Chris.

I've got an electric fan, and it's on a lot at the moment.

Have you checked the thermostat works in a bowl of hot water? Try running without one and see what happens, it may give some useful information as to where to look, and I believe you can get ones with different temperature settings, you may have the wrong one perhaps? 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

I put a new 88c thermostat in and tested beforehand. I might try running with it to see what happens.

Are you loosing any coolant?

I had a similar problem but with my 200Tdi, changed everything, flushed it 2 new viscous fans (at ruinous expense!)

I had occasional hot running and was loosing abut a cup full or water every 3 months, eventually took the head off and it had got a tiny tiny crack on an inlet gallery which was just enough to raise the temperature and loose coolant.

If you have changed everything else it may be time to get the head pressure tested Big Cry Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197
